In an unsurprising turn of events, German automaker Opel announced it will continue its sponsorships for four German football clubs. Contracts with Bundesliga clubs Freiburg and Mainz have been extended by two years to the end of the 2017-2018 season. Previously, contracts were already in place for two additional clubs from Dortmund and Leverkusen.
“Our commitment to football has a positive effect on our brand profile with the media exposure and the joint activities with the clubs playing a role. Obviously, the popularity of our partners is a huge advantage. SC Freiburg and Mainz 05 are perfect examples for a sincere, professional and down to earth approach paying off – regardless of the current standings,” said Vice President Sales & Aftersales Opel Group Peter Christian Küspert.
On Mainz 05’s side, they’re equally thrilled to continue the partnership, with President Harold Strutz, saying, “We are also very pleased to continue the successful cooperation with Opel. Opel is an authentic and approachable brand and is a great match for the Bundesliga and Mainz 05. The partnership is brought to life by numerous joint activities and the continuity give it even more importance.”
Opel first began their sponsorship of the teams in 2012, where they purposely chose to include more than one team to lend their hand to, creating a broader sense of awareness for the brand.
Besides big-name sponsorships, Opel will once again focus on grassroots football as well with the upcoming Opel Family Cup. The tournament will see children and adults alike on the field throughout Germany in friendly competition.

OK it’s good but Opel have to sponsor the Bayern Munich as before, BM is the most popular club in Germany. In adition to football there is handball which is a very popular game in Germany.
