Michael Irvin Says College Recruiters Attempted To Bribe Him With Chevrolet Camaro

Cowboys great Michael Irvin recently made a phone-call appearance on the Dan Patrick Show to discuss national signing day, the Super Bowl and other hot-topics in the football world. They got to talking about sought-after high school athletes, which is when Irvin dropped a particularly interesting knowledge bomb on us.

When Patrick asked what was the best offer he ever received from a university recruiter, Irvin replied simply with “A Camaro.” Apparently, the recruiter was giving Mike a ride home in the sports car when he commented on how nice it was. Irvin then mentioned he “hadn’t been in a car like this” ever before, at which point the recruiter said “it’s yours, all you have to do is sign.”

This isn’t the first time we’ve about university recruiters bribing skilled high school athletes with sports cars. Former NCAA quarter back Pat White claimed Alabama University bribed him with a Corvette after rumors flared up the school bought current running back Derrick Henry a Dodge Challenger. It’s not clear if either of the claims are true, but they don’t seem far fetched.

Check out Irvin’s interview below. The Camaro bit comes around the 8:45 mark.

  1. Colleges make a lot of money off of football. Students should be able to except cars and cash. This is a capitalist country.Prohibiting this is just communism.

    1. Funny you mention communism. Some areas of the US economy are thankfully still based on capitalism, but not all. In capitalism you either sink or swim. GM didn’t swim but wasn’t allowed to sink as nature intended.

    2. Prohibiting bribery in US college football does not automatically mean the US governing system has become communistic. Bribery itself can be a measure of how corrupt ANY governing system can become if the principles of that governing system are ignored in favour of kickbacks, be it communist, capitalist, or otherwise.

How the hell you attempted to string US college football and communism together, I don’t even know.
