General Motors To Idle Production At Orion And Oshawa Assembly Plants

General Motors has scheduled downtime at its Orion Assembly plant in suburban Detroit and its Oshawa Assembly plant in Ontario amid mounting dealer inventories, Automotive News reports.

The Orion facility is expected to be shut down from March 9-13 to account for high inventories of the Chevrolet Sonic and Buick Verano. The plant was also idled for the week of February 16 and is scheduled for another down week April 6-10.

Meanwhile, the Flex line at GM’s Oshawa Assembly plant will also be shut down from April 13-17 to trim production of the Chevrolet Camaro and Impala, Buick Regal and Cadillac XTS.

According to AN data, Chevrolet had a 216-day supply on Sonics on hand as of February 1, the highest since the subcompact’s debut in August 2011. There was also a 131-day supply of Camaros, a 213-day supply of Regals, a 92-day supply of Veranos, a 65-day supply of Impalas and a 109-day XTS supply.

The rising inventory of passenger cars comes as low oil prices have sparked demand for larger trucks and SUVs, causing passenger car sales to fall. AN also notes that GM is now trimming production on nameplates that are late in their respective product lifecycles and are therefore due for a redesign in the near future. In other words, the 2016 Chevy Camaro is coming!
