General Motors has filed an application to register the term “Badlands” as a trademark with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), GM Authority has discovered.
The automaker’s February 16th, 2015 filing carries serial number 86535743 and specifies that the mark will be used for “Motor land vehicles, namely, trucks”.
The GM Authority Take
Call us crazy, but Badlands sounds very much like a truck to conquer bad lands, or those that are not easily accessible with a less capable vehicle. Could this be the Ford F-150 Raptor fighter we’ve been waiting for?

Can we now hope this is more than a paint and trim package.
This name would fit a Raptor killer well.
Great name! Cue “The Boss” I can hear the first commercial now:
Badlands, you gotta live it everyday,
Let the broken hearts stand
As the price you’ve gotta pay,
We’ll keep pushin’ till it’s understood,
and these badlands start treating us good.
For the ones who had a notion,
A notion deep inside,
That it ain’t no sin to be glad you’re alive
I wanna find one face that ain’t looking through me
I wanna find one place,
I wanna spit in the face of these badlands
Lets not get too carried away. We have enough silly Ford and Ram Commercials already.
Yeah, let’s stick with the Brokeback Mountain-esque “He’s strong” song from when the K2s first came out.
Sorry you’re favorite movie will never be chosen even by FOAD.
“Badlands”, “Big Sky”. Very cool. How about Appalachians, Great Plains, or Monument Valley? Those names would be great Raptor fighters, too.
Badlands = hair metal band from the 80’s. Not diggin the name for a truck. Silverado Outlaw would have been better for a Ford Raptor fighter.
Outlaw. I like that actually. I liked Badlands at first, but It kinda sounds weird being plural. Drop the S, think of all the money you’ll save on not printing the extra letter for this sticker packaged truck…
Ok so the Z71 trail boss came and as well as the Silverado big sky, Scottsdale and now Badlands? could anyone explain what GM is doing right here? And so anyone have a clue on when is these models/concepts/trims or whatever is going to appear or any anocement going to happen?
ZR2 fits better for Raptor fighter IMO.
Well Outlaw may have had issues with those inside GM. They often avoid names with negative themes. Outlaws are criminals you know. GM has never used Banshee because of the ghost and supernatural nature beyond the show cars.
They try to find names that will not be taken out of context by some simple minds.
Also there are so many Outlaws on the market already in many other products the name may have already been taken.
Second if you look at the history of most Chevy trucks they take on names of places or features of the west. Badlands is a rugged tough terrain in S Dakota. Cheyanne, Scottsdale, Silverado, all are cities. Big Sky is a feature of Wyoming High Country also is another western reference. These all stay with in the theme they have carried for years.
Ford on the other hand is a Dinosaur. Kind of fitting.
I’m glad I continued reading down to this post. I was gonna say pretty much the same thing….Yeah…I want sure if some if these people actually knew what Badlands actually means… 😉
It’s funny that you mentioned Banshee. I was thinking that too, but then Yamaha might be upset because Ford and GM took theirs two most iconic ATV names… It’s kinda funny too because the Outlaw is a Polaris ATV. I’ve never been to the US badlands but driven through the Canadian ones, defently cool terrain. Just drop the S is all.
Didn’t Chevy have a Silverado named “the Boss” in the 80’s?
Dodge will counter the The Dude and Macho from the 70’s. Lol
It’s going to be the Avalanche Remade as Badlands… aka Raptor Killer! GM should push out 3 Concept Models and let the public decide! Use social media to your advantage.
