Former General Motors Exec Defects To Chinese Brand Qoros

The former head of General Motors’ Chinese operations, Phil Murtaugh, has taken a job as the CEO of Chinese brand Qoros Automotive, according to Automotive News.

Qoros, the result of a joint venture between China’s Chery Automobile Co. and Israel Corp., is looking compete with foreign automakers like Volkswagen and GM in China. The automaker has the capacity to produce about 150,000 cars per year at a factory just outside Shanghai, but sold just 6,967 units in 2014.

Murtaugh will bring a wealth of automotive industry knowledge to the relatively new automaker, having also led Chrysler Group’s Asian operations and served as the CEO of now defunct electric automaker Coda Automotive. The 60-year old started in his new position with Qoros on Monday, the automaker said in a statement.

Sam loves to write and has a passion for auto racing, karting and performance driving of all types.
