With a newly redesigned Toyota Tacoma just unveiled at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, this comparison between an example of the old, second-generation Japanese truck and its rival in the mid-size pickup segment – the Chevy Colorado – might be a bit premature.
But if for nothing else, AutoGuide‘s comparison of the two medium-weights should at least prove illustrative as to how far the “underdog” Colorado has come since its last iteration. In terms of numbers, the Chevy has the Toyota beat in pretty much every way. Even with 0.4 liters less displacement at 3.6 L, the Chevrolet makes 3 more lb-ft of torque, and an astonishing extra 70 horsepower. That grants it slightly more hauling and towing capacity, while still allowing for 20 mpg to the Toyota’s 15 (as tested).
So how well does the Chevy hold up on the road? Well, in terms of acceleration, it’s a wash; AutoGuide notes that while the Tacoma produces less horsepower, it also weighs less, making it feel just as nimble. However, when it comes to comfort and ride, not only does the Colorado’s thoroughly modern interior have that of the aging Tacoma beat, but even equipped with the Z71 package (as this Colorado is), traveling over rough surfaces feels and sounds more supple and damped in the Chevy.
Add to that the price of the two trucks as-tested – $37,525 for the Colorado vs. $38,317 for the Tacoma – and it becomes even more clear how and why the Chevrolet wins this comparison.

I owned a Tacoma double cab 4 wheel drive 4.0 Liter TRD for 6 1/2 years. I averaged 21 or 22 MPG. 15 MPG seems incredulous.
I wonder how you managed to do that! We owned 3 tacomas for our business, all 4.0 4×4 tdr, 2 sport and 1 off road, 1 is manual. They averaged 17-18 on the highway, and the most ever was 21 driving somewhat down the mountain.
I owned a 2006 Z71, and as a lady, I simply loved driving it! I never had any bad or expensive trouble with it. I got great gas mileage and the interior was very comfortable for my 5′ 2″ small frame. I used it on busy route 95 here in Washington Metro area. It performed!
I can not wait until my new one arrives later this spring! It will be the Z71 package also. I buy only AMERICAN. It keeps our money here!
