38 Years Later, $75 Pickup Finishes Job Of Taking Minnesota Man To Work Every Day

These days you can’t get much for a buck. Yet for 38 years, Minnesota resident Bob Sportel has driven a 1957 Chevy pickup to work that he bought for just $75. Talk about stretching your dollar.

For Sportel, he needed a truck to get to work many years ago. After bartering with a farmer, he bought the Chevy pickup and started drove it to the local farmer co-op. Flash forward to 38 years later and the newly retired Sportel still has the truck.

This isn’t a restored truck story though. The truck shows the wear and tear of more than 40 years on the road. It has rivets holding the vendor together, duct tape keeping the upholstery on the seats and rusty holes throughout.

Sportel guesses the truck has more than 300,000 miles, but he really doesn’t know. The odometer hasn’t worked in years. That doesn’t matter. Throughout the many frigid Minnesota winters, the pickup got him from home to work and that is what matters.

Tim is a married father of three living in Western Nebraska. He is the editor and contributor to several automotive sites. He spends a lot of time reading, writing and talking cars/trucks with fans, insiders and manufacture reps. When he isn't talking about cars, he is usually out playing golf - a never ending obsession to see how far the little white ball will fly.
