Following its debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November, the Chevrolet Chaparral 2X Vision Granturismo Concept has officially launched in the online video game world. Players of the Playstation 3 racing game Gran Turismo 6 can now download the 2X online in the game, which unlike its real life counterpart, is fully operational and ready to race.
The 2X was designed by Chevrolet’s design team in collaboration with legendary racecar designer and Chaparral team founder Jim Hall. Chevy and Chaparral’s partnership began in the 1960s when Hall chose Chevrolet small block power for his advanced road racing cars, which are some of the most successful and famous cars to enter SCCA competition.
The 2X is a “fantasy car in every sense of the word,” said lead GM designer Ed Welburn. It receives power from a laser beamed-energy propulsion system that pulses beams of light into a shroud, creating shock waves that generate 900 horsepower’s worth of thrust. Attendees of the Los Angeles Auto Show were able to test the car in-game on the show floor, however today marks the first day GT6 plays are able to download it off the game’s online marketplace.
