Sound Regulations May Bar C7 Corvette From South Korean Launch

Chevrolet Korea recently held an event for local media to test its 2015 Aveo, Cruze and Trax models. Following the event, a press conference was held in which journalists quizzed local execs about the company’s future product plans.

Part of the conversation was about the C7 Corvette Stingray, which Korean buyers would love to see on their shores. The only problem is the country’s engine noise regulations, which may bar the C7 and its throaty 450 horsepower LT1 V8 from ever driving on Korean roads.

“The launch of the seventh-generation Corvette is being delayed indefinitely due to Korea’s regulation on automobile noise,” said Chevrolet Korea CEO Sergio Rocha. “Although such regulatory stance may benefit the industry in the short run, I wonder if that’s something that should be in place for a long time.”

The case for bringing the C7 to Korea is looking increasingly weak. Rocha said “only 12 Corvettes are imported to Korea a year,” which makes importing the C7 to the country rather pointless. We can’t see the company using time and resources convincing lawmakers to change the noise law, only to sell 12 examples a year. Keep your fingers crossed, Korean Chevy fans.
