Passive Door Locking Locks The Doors Of Your GM Vehicle Automatically: Feature Spotlight

So, you arrive to your destination, park, shut off your car, and exit the vehicle. But since you still need to lock the doors, you’re not done yet… right? In a word, no.

With a little-known feature called Passive Locking available on most GM vehicles equipped with Keyless Access, the vehicle will lock its doors automatically after the following three conditions have been met:

  • The vehicle has been turned off
  • All of the doors have been closed
  • At least one Remote Keyless Entry transmitter (key fob) has been removed from the vehicle

Passive Door Locking enables you to not even use use the lock button on the key fob or the button on the vehicle’s door handle to lock the vehicle. You simple park, turn the car off, get out, and walk away. And the vehicle does the rest (locks itself). How convenient is that?

For vehicles with Keyless Access, Passive Door locking can be enabled in the Settings menu of Chevy MyLink, Buick-GMC-Opel IntelliLink, or Cadillac CUE. Simply go to Settings > Vehicle > Remote Lock, Unlock, Start. From here, enable Passive Door Lock.

To note, if other electronic devices interfere with the key fob’s signal, the vehicle may not detect the key fob inside the vehicle. If passive locking is enabled, the doors may lock with the key fob inside the vehicle. And it’s probably not a good idea to leave the key fob in an unattended vehicle.

    1. This worked for my 2015 yukon xl. from the HOME screen (with all the big icons on it) I went to SETTINGS (upper right corner) then VEHICLE and scroll thru until you see REMOTE LOCK, make sure passive locking is set to OFF. Walk inside with your key fob, wait a bit, leave key inside go back out to garage and it will STILL be unlocked. Thank goodness. The owners manual was USELESS on this topic and I found dozens of dead-end solutions on line. This is the only site that helped. Thank you.

      1. I agree whole heartedly! My new Cadillac CT6 owners manual did not explain how to set passive door lock. I kept trying over and over with no success. Finally, I did a search and arrived to this site. I followed each step and wa la I was able to set passive door locking after exiting vehicle. GM should be made aware and update their owners manual to reflect this fast, easy way to enable or disable passive door lock.

        2. Agree! Reading both the physical and app version of the GMC manual it wasn’t clear to me that Passive Door Lock is the feature I wanted turn on, nor did it make clear how simple it is to toggle on/off via Settings on my 2019 Acadia control panel. This article fixed me up on both ends, so thanks for posting.

      1. I’d be curious to know exactly what happened and if the feature truly malfunctioned, or there was some other reason for the event you experienced.

Logically, the car should not have locked when you have the key fob in the car. The only way that could have taken place is if the key fob ran out of battery.

What model and model year vehicle?

        1. I just had something similar happen to my 2015 Sonic today. I started the car as I often do to let it warm up on a cold Carolina morning. I came back out to leave for work and all doors were locked with the car running in the driveway. I had to use a wire clothes hanger and a thin piece of metal to get access to the interior of the door to pop the lock. On another note i was able to gain access in under 3 minutes as a novice. Perhaps my Key fob has a weak battery and the car couldn’t detect the fob in the car. Thats the only thing I can figure happened. Maybe???

        4. Hi Mr. Luft, this just happened to my wife’s 2015 GMC Yukon Denali. She came out of the store, opened the back door by pressing the button on the rear door handle to unlock her car, put her purse (with the key fob inside her purse) on the back seat with her shopping and all of a sudden she hears the locks go on and the interior lights turn off! She then closes the rear door and proceeds to open the front door but the front door (or any other doors including the rear hatch) don’t open! She presses the button on the door handle but nothing happens. Also she tried to open the rear hatch by pressing the button on the inside of the rear hatch handle, the amber turn signals would flash every time but the rear hatch would not open! she called me and I brought the spare key to unlock the car.

        5. Not true. Waiting for a locksmith to come right now . Key fob in the car, and key in the ignition and the unlock buttons will not let you unlock with key in the ignition. So there you go. Key fob is not dead. I hate this feature.

Trash-can the owner’s manual , its only purpose in life is to sell you something(which you are already stuck with !)… When this happened to me with the ’06 PT Cruiser(similar design) , I called the local garage(most all makes) and they have an expensive “non-lethal” break-in electronic tool …Thus ..no problem .. So, Cheryl, make your own manual, write down the solution – this may recur…

True was my choice to let Onstar lapse (and the $20 plus to ATT for “data”). BUT to reactivate my account to let them unlock the doors you have to be IN THE CAR to push the Onstar button.
Had my 2016 Buick Encore for 3 1/2 years no issues. All of a sudden it started locking the doors (inconsistently) when closing the doors. Happened 2X in the last month. First time at the gas station-walked 2 miles home in the cold/rain (phone/purse/keys in the care). I have left the keys in the car while pumping gas numerous times before without incidence. I believe it started with the recent use/misuse of the Remote start, but haven’t figured out the cause or solution.

  11. I just took delivery of a 2015 SRX which has the passive door lock system. For unlocking, you have two choices – Driver Door Only or All Doors. When Driver Door Only is selected, the driver door works as you would expect – only unlocks the driver’s door on first touch (of door handle button) and all doors on second touch. However, all other doors act as if the system is in the All Door mode. When locked, you can go to any of the passenger doors and unlock the whole car with a single touch. Anybody else with the same problem? Any resolution?

    1. Resolved at dealership. My misunderstanding of how system worked. I had the keyfob in my pocket while I walked around and tried other doors. Even though I selected Driver Door only, it was because I had the keyfob near the other doors that they unlocked. A technician who did not have a keyfob tried opening a door on the opposite side of the car from where I was and it would not unlock. So, my issue all had to do with where the keyfob was relative to the door trying to be opened. Smart doors? The cars knows.

I do not have a remote start no I don’t pay for onstar. Don’t have satalite radio because of the fowl language on some stations so I just play CD’s. The other day I stopped at a construction site engine running, My small dog inside Hot day left the engine running in park, closed the door bang the door locked after five seconds. Called AAA after an hour wait they opened the door. So I removed the key remote lock from the ignition key placed it on my house/office keys which I keep in my pocket. every few weeks out of the blue I hear the horn blow doors lock after parking in the garage. Dealer said found nothing wrong. So tell me how to get the grimling out of my truck. When I try to get this POS to lock it will not but may or may lock on its own. Today all the door open sitting in the truck have a coffee break it locked all the doors, must have been a ghost that locked the doors.

Car still running we drove off, stopped a block away and stopped the engine got out and the displays still on music playing never locked or turned off the radio so we locked the doors (window down) and to our surprise the car allowed us to unlock the doors, enter the car, start the engine which still said no remote found and we drove off again.

WOW would a thief like this new feature!!! No key needed to restart the car what a bad idea.

What gives Buick why does the system allow the vehicle to restart when no remote in the vehicle or near by over a long block away and it still starts.

(The 2015 Chevy/GMC pickup will leave you stranded because these vehicles will allow the driver door to lock with the engine running and you standing outside) My friends and I returned to the vehicle after a snowmobile ride. The owner of the vehicle Tony Britt remote started the vehicle to allow it to warm up as it was -3 degrees. I asked Tony for the key fob to get something out of the vehicle. I unlocked the driver door with the remote put the key in the ignition shut the door and all doors were locked with the engine running. WE called OnStar and asked them to please unlock the door. They said the 90 day free trial had not been activated. WE asked the OnStar person to please set up the 90 day free trial. He told us we had to push the blue OnStar button inside the vehicle. I guess he forgot why we were calling OnStar in the first place. So we explained it all over again to him that we were locked out of the vehicle with the engine running at -3 Degrees and no way to get out of the cold. Tony’s wife was at home in Baker City, Oregon 97814 She tried her best to get OnStar to allow the unlock of the vehicle. They said NO. We had to wait for Clay to drive from Baker City in his new Ford pickup to Boron, Oregon, just outside of Sumpter, Oregon with the spare key. Please don’t tell me this issue can’t be resolved with a simple REFLASH of the body control module. By the way I own a NICE 2014 4×4 GMC VIN#3GTU2VEJXEG379134 and that vehicle will not let the driver door to lock with the key in the vehicle with the engine running or not. The vehicles VIN#1GC4K0E89FF653331 is the vehicle that has this issue. Paul C Townsend proud owner of numerous GM vehicles.

The headaches this “feature” causes far far far outweigh whatever benefits it would ever have. I don’t know of anyone that uses this. It’s good at one thing. Locking you out of your car. And now in this article they are saying you might not even be able to rely on it to lock the doors? It’s GM creating a problem where there wasn’t one. There is a reason no other manufacturer has it. Every time I rent a GM car I have to fuss around with this stupidity. I’m guessing the same people that made the decision to include this are the same ones that remove standard things light lights in the glove compartment or made the decision to hardwire the dashboard and switch bulbs to the circuit board effectively making a burned out dash light into a $600 problem. Ugh GM already.

For those complaining about locking your keys in the car, you can change this setting so that if a key fob is left in the vehicle and all doors are closed, then the horn will beam short three times and the doors will not lock. Genius. Excellent feature.

My 07 Yukon, 09 Suburban, don’t know if 13 Yukon does it, probably. It is a big enough problem to not buy GM vehicles any more. I only own 6 currently, I know , big deal.

We can’t get out of the drivers side AT ALL! This is exactly what’s going on..all of the doors r automatically locking back, immediately after u press the unlock button but the good thing is that all the other doors will open with the doors locked bc they will unlock as you’re pulling the door handles..I’ve tried getting out of the car & using the key fob, nothing, I’ve even tried using the actual key inside the door & it won’t even budge with the key! Now when I use the key fob & try the unlock buttons they will at least unlock but lock right bck, immediately! PLEASE TELL ME SOMEONE KNOWS HOW TO HELP ME???

  34. Yea great! So your fob falls out your pocket and is on the seat. You close the door and it locks with the fob inside – unless you have onstar you’re now screwed (hhmmmm) because it can’t be remotely unlocked without onstar. So they send out aaa and they bend the top of the door to use a metal rod to open the door -But can’t do it so they suggest a locksmith- but there’s no locks. Nightmare. Easily done – and guess what? The anti lock out option doesn’t stop you getting locked out. What’s the point?? Thanks Buick for forcing on star on the customer for a service that shouldn’t be needed in the first place. If you were really serious about competing with foreign manufacturers and providing excellent functionality and customer satisfaction rather than skinning them alive then maybe the US auto industry would be the leader. Oh and using navigation is only possible with onstar for $50 a month. Upgrading it to a stand alone system is prohibitive and apparently impossible . Hhmmmm have to call onstar every time for new directions- then they allow the nav to work. -yea thanks a lot. If the battery dies you’re totally screwed.

People are bad mouthing it. It’s causing more problems than solving. It’s causing people to come back for WARRANTY solutions and costing you $$$. and buyer much frustration. PLEASE remove any automatic locking and unlocking on ALL GM cars. I know the lawyers are forcing some of this but it’s a bad decision.
At a minimum, allow drivers to disable auto locking /unlocking like on my 2003 Trailblazer.

I shut the back door and tried to open the driver’s door to get in. It was locked. With my keys in the ignition w/fob, running. I checked all the doors, all locked. I called GMC with no luck. I had to have someone bring me my extra key from home because I didn’t want to leave my truck with the keys in it and running. Passive locking or no, my truck should not have locked with my fob in it and keys in ignition with no one inside.

  46. My wife and I share her beloved Red Tint Jewel 2011 Camaro, but the auto door locks are giving us grief: We park it securely overnight in our attached garage. For convenience I leave my LEVI’S BASED keys, (or she leaves her purse and PURSE BASED keys in the car), so they don’t get misplaced. A 3rd spare key is hidden in the garage. Every night our Camaro locks itself ! It’s annoying having to retrieve keys to unlock it every morning. If the spare key, (we have to so often use), doesn’t get put back in it’s drawer, and one of us is away, the person left has keys locked inside, require calling OnStar. There seems to be no setting in the Lock Options that prevents it from auto-locking. SO we now leave our car door ajar, in our garage, so we can’t get locked out if we can’t find a key. —It is a fact of life that people occasionally misplace keys. A self-locking car should not be a forced condition for all owners. Please tell me the “Don’t Lock” setting.
Question: (Are keys in the garage, or our adjacent bedroom “sensed” by the car?).

    2. The system is working as it should. The car detects the key outside the car (a way to unlock the car) so it auto locks. If you leave a key inside the car, on purpose or otherwise, and walk away with one in your pocket or purse, you would want it to lock if you had passive locking turned on. If you don’t want it to lock, when you get out of the car, hold the unlock button down until you get a beep then close the door. You are telling the system not to passive lock. Passive locking will turn on again automatically after the car is started next.

      1. So GM has given another task to remember: if we don’t want to get locked out THIS time, we cannot leave our keys in the car in our own garage. We have to instead, keep the keys, hold down a button for a while and beep the horn, wake the baby, to be allowed back into our car in our own attached garage.

What could it hurt GM to let the owner decide, based on his life, his habits, his needs?

How can we wake up someone at GM?

I must close the door and press the button again. Then the door is locked. Dealer cannot find problem and duplicated it on another Malibu in the lot. So they said that’s all they can do.

Now why would I use the passive door locking feature. I cannot trust this technology. You are trusting the car to be locked and you cannot reach back and test the door because you would be close enough to the car and it would then unlock. We place too much trust in these technologies!

  52. With the latest technology a thief can use a code reader if he is with in range to steal the codes from your remote when you press it. If you notice that your remote does not work the first time when leaving your car and you have to press it again beware that the first failure was caused by the theifs receiver stealing your code and when you press your remote again the thief will now have two different codes to use when you leave your car so he can steal it. If you ever have this problem get back in your car and move to a different parking place. Then manually lock your car.

    Now comes my question?

Does anyone know if your car locks it’s self with out using a remote does the car send a code or is the inside system that locks the car self contained and therefore safe from a thief who will never be able to steal the code from the self locking car.

  72. I actually LIKE the passive lock feature, however I think it should be programmed so that if ANY key FOB is sensed inside the vehicle, the doors should not lock. Our biggest frustration is when my wife is re-fueling the vehicle. She keeps her FOB in her purse, but when re-fueling, she has to remember to take her purse out of the vehicle with her, otherwise she will be locked out. This seems like an easy software fix, so not sure why GM has not implemented this as an option.

    1. Passive locking does test for a key left inside the vehicle after the last door is closed. If detected, it should not lock. If it does there is a fix. Also, you can use the options to warn you when a key is left inside. If you keep your key in your pocket and your wife leaves her’s inside the vehicle, the test will know that a key is inside but it will also know a key is outside and will lock… as it should.

I keep my key in my pocket and when I gas and don’t want the doors to lock, I leave my door ajar.

My wife was just locked out of the car because she left it running in the driveway while she went back into the house to get something. It is a good thing that my son knew where I kept the 2nd key. I think the main problem was the car detected the other key in the drawer in my desk so it autolocked. That is unacceptable. I’ll never buy another Cadillac if I can’t disable autolock. The idea that locking the door will protect you from all sorts of trouble is a decision that I should be making, not my car. For what its worth, we leave our keys in the console all the time. We live in a safe town that is “in the middle of nowhere”.

The truck never locks itself if I take the keys with me.
    This is aggravating

    1. And clearly YOU don’t know how to WRITE, as you left out words!!! Your idiotic comment about reading the manual because “it’s all in there” is bs and you know it!!! Clearly if you read the comments you will find MANY MANY examples of where the vehicles are NOT DOING what the manual states they are supposed to!!! If the vehicle auto locks when getting out and leaving key in ignition, but NEVER DOES IT when the keyfob is removed, show me where THAT is explained in the manual!!!! Moron!

  101. I’ve had 3 Nissan’s. I get in start the vehicle all doors lock. When I turn off the car and exist the vehicle I press the lock on the door get up and exit the vehicle. The doors stay locked. I just purchased a 2017 XT5 Cadillac. Tried locking the doors the same way. Can’t. Was advised of the different door locking set ups. My opinion is GMC made locking the doors way too complicated yet don’t have no enough options to suit each buyer. Some like it, some don’t. I also don’t like the volume scroll bar. Don’t like the delay when changing the radio stations. My 2015 Nissan XM radio has the option to replay. If you like your favorite song you can replay it. Want to replay the news you can rewind it over and over again. Love, love, love this feature. Was told by the salesperson Cadillac is far more superior and luxurious to a Nissan. My friend has a low end Chevy Cruise with the same features. I feel like I was suckered into buying the Cadillac. Seriously considering on returning the XT5 and go get me another Nissan.

  102. Try again , this time ,EDIT ! IMO, automatic door locks are a horrible feature, Nissan or GMC – no matter..But, if one must have them, make the locks programmable and intelligent…If this is impossible, and it may be; simply make them simple and limited in their use.

  105. I operate a vape shop web directory and we have had a listing from a vape store in the United States that additionally offers CBD product lines. A Calendar month later, PayPal has contacted use to claim that our account has been limited and have asked us to take out PayPal as a payment method from our vape store website directory. We do not offer CBD items such as CBD oil. We merely provide internet marketing professional services to CBD firms. I have checked out Holland & Barrett– the UK’s Major Health Retail store and if you take a close look, you will see that they offer a reasonably considerable range of CBD goods, specifically CBD oil and they also happen to accept PayPal as a payment solution. It seems that PayPal is applying double standards to different companies. Due to this constraint, I can no longer accept PayPal on my CBD-related website. This has limited my payment choices and currently, I am seriously reliant on Cryptocurrency payments and straightforward bank transfers. I have talked with a solicitor from a Magic Circle law office in The city of london and they said that what PayPal is doing is definitely not legal and discriminatory as it ought to be applying a systematic criterion to all companies. I am yet to consult another legal representative from a US law firm in The city of london to see what PayPal’s legal position is in the United States. In the meantime, I would be extremely appreciative if anyone here at targetdomain could offer me with different payment processors/merchants that deal with CBD companies.

  106. This feature is terrible. My 2020 Silverado won’t lock if the key fob is in the truck.

But I left my keys in my truck on accident, went into work, came back out and now my truck is locked for some reason with the keys in the ignition……. Awesome

Yesterday I had to unlock the damn thing 3 times in a row to get my stuff out of it because it kept locking the doors on me within a few seconds of closing any door.
I need to DISABLE this annoying feature.

  115. 2020 GMC AT4 with Key less entry. This morning my wife left her remote sitting on the console and exited the vehicle. She came back about a half hour later to find that the truck was locked with purse and keys sitting on the center console. She had to get my remote so she could access the vehicle. Passive locking is a nice feature but not when a remote is left in the vehicle. Is there a setting where passive locking still works as long as there are no remotes left in the vehicle?

  116. The passive locks on our 2010 suburban suck. It locks with both fobs inside. Last time both were in the seat with no electronics around. It’s not consistent about when it’ll lock, so you’re always guessing and quickly making sure you have the key on you before it has time to lock.

  117. 2024 GMC 2500 HD 500mi. On it walked away the door locked went to a restaurant and someone broke the rear door glass out and sole everything. I was traveling and they got all I had with me. The alarm didn’t go off when they broke the window or when they opened the door. Everyone beware your alarm won’t work when you use passive door locks. Just picked it up from the dealership after 4 hrs thats what they told me.
