OnStar’s New Security Zone Service Lets You Know If Your Car Moves

Shanghai OnStar — GM’s China-based telematics subsidiary — announced several new features at the 12th Guangzhou International Auto Show. One of the new features is Security Zone, and besides being highly useful, it’s also just plain cool.

Meant to increase the security of a vehicle, Security Zone allows customers to set up a perimeter around their vehicle using the OnStar mobile app. If the vehicle leaves the predefined perimeter, owners will be notified immediately via a text message.

We can think of several use cases for the feature, with the most obvious being vehicle theft or towing, and knowing when/if a family member (or friend) is using the vehicle. Useful and cool? Absolutely.

Currently, Security Zone is only available in the OnStar Mobile App, a Chinese-market variant of the OnStar RemoteLink app offered in North America. Whether GM-OnStar plans on introducing a comparable service to subscribers in North America is unknown. We’ve reached out to GM for comment and will update this article upon hearing back.
