GM Extends Gift Card Deal For Those Affected By Ignition Switch Recall

Just last week, we reported on an effort by General Motors to entice recall-affected car owners to schedule appointments at their local dealers and have the faulty ignition switch replaced. To lure the remaining 900,000 or so owners into service centers, General Motors offered a $25 gift card to one of seven businesses to each owner who has the switch serviced.

Now, the Detroit Free Press is reporting that General Motors has extended the offer deadline from December 1st to January 1st. This was reportedly in response to nationwide dealer concerns that the faster-approaching deadline would cause too massive a pile-up of GM product owners at dealer service centers.

If preventing a potential loss of power on the freeway possibly causing a cataclysmic chain of events leading to the deaths of you and any other precious human cargo wasn’t reason enough, there you go. Gift card.

As previously stated, the deadline to receive said gift card is January 1st of the new year. Simply take your affected General Motors vehicle in for ignition switch replacement, and then inform GM regarding which business you would like a gift card to: Amazon, AMC, Applebee’s, Bass Pro Shops, Red Robin, Starbucks, or Wal-Mart.

  1. They will still need to come up with a plan for those who already got it done who want to be rewarded for their time.

GM should give this to anyone who had it done that request a card. It is only fair.

We have run into this with give away’s at work. No matter what you do the folks who did not get the same deal call and want it too. Never fails to happen.

    1. Never received my gift card either after I got it done. This is not the first time I could not get what was promised. I don’t know why I keep buying GM products when they don’t follow through. Dealership didn’t give me the golf club GM promised and now no gift card. Pretty bad business to my estimation but all companies are getting worse. None care about customer satisfaction Shameful!
Not happy with qulity of products lately. Had to go from 4 cyl regal to Lucerne.. ..Still not 100% satisfied(partly dealership, partly manufacturer).Sad!

  2. My mother was told by the dealer they know nothing about this. Also she has been waiting forever as the dealer also says they only get 6 repair parts at a time and she has been waiting 2 months as the dealer also said they have to do them in a certain order. Don’t sound right to me!

  4. I agree with Donna Howard’s comment. I can not find the email address that was given to me after I completed the ignition switch safety recall repair. Someone please respond and explain.

  5. I wanted the gift card, but two Michigan dealers did not have any parts to do the repair when I wanted to take my car in for the ignition switch replacement in November. One dealer just got the part December 29, 2014. That is impossible to get the repair done by the Jan 1 deadline for the gift certificate. I suspect another GM deception to mislead the public to think that everything is OK with this safety issue.

  6. GOOD NEWS : I ran into the same problem when I did a Google search for “www.gmrewardscards.com/giftcard”. …. I could not access the link by any of the websites offered. ==== However, I have good news !!! >>>> I had my ignition switch repair completed in November 2014. The giftcard offer has been extended until MARCH 1ST, 2015. …. I just placed my request order for a giftcard by typing “www.gmrewardscards.com/giftcard” into the URL address bar area (also called the title bar) at the very top left corner on the screen. …. The request was accepted with a confirmation number, and states the card “should” arrive in the mail within 10 days. ==== I hope this information is helpful to anyone who is having trouble with this issue.

  11. I get the letter on Saturday the 28th, stating that you must make your selection for your gift card by March 1, (Sunday). So the website doesn’t work and the phone number given in the letter has a message to call back during business hours.

They pulled it off. Post a bogus web site that isn’t available and close the window to request your gift card on a Sunday. It doesn’t get any better than that. Go GM! Think long and hard when you purchase your next vehicle.
