It’s hard to wrap your head around Chevrolet and Chaparral’s new Vision GT concept, the 2X. It’s not clear how the laser-driven propulsion system works, the skydiver-like seating position is hard to fathom and it looks more like a sci-fi movie prop than a racecar. But the whole idea behind the 2X, and as Chaparral as a company, is innovation, which always starts with an idea.
The 2X may be a little absurd in its theory and design, but so were Chaparral’s racecars. People probably thought Chaparral founder Jim Hall was a bit crazy when he mounted a huge piece of metal shaped the opposite of an airplane wing on his racecar, but he ended up pioneering the technology which would be used on nearly every racecar going forward.
So while the 2X’s skydiver seating position sounds like something a creative 11-year old made up, don’t be too quick to dismiss it, because you never know when someone is on the cusp of innovation. Chevrolet’s launch video for the 2X, which we’ve embedded below, reiterates this sentiment. It also explains the 2X a little better for those who still don’t quite understand what their looking at.

Jim Hall and the Chaparral were my first favorite driver/car I can remember. So cool.
