When it comes to 1957 model year General Motors convertibles, the most sought after model for most classic car enthusiasts is the Bel Air. Oldsmobile also offered a two-door drop top cruiser, the 98, which for ’57-’58 was offered with a powerful J2 tri-power 371 CI Rocket V8, setting it apart from the Chevy and also Buick’s Roadmaster at the time.
A 1957 Oldsmobile 98 with the aforementioned J2 tri-power engine is set to be auctioned off at Mecum’s upcoming Anaheim auction. The car appears to have gone under a full restoration and looks almost better than new, with a flawless body and interior and a spotless engine bay.
This car was well-equipped from the factory with Oldsmobile’s J2 tri-power engine option, which added three two-barrel carburetors to the engine. The J2 engine was good for an output of 312 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque, compared to 277 horsepower and 400 lb•ft from normal 371 CI Olds engines. The car also has standard power steering, a power antenna, a power convertible top and Oldsmobile’s Wonderbar Super Deluxe radio.
This relatively rare boulevard cruiser will be sold off during Mecum Anaheim, set to take place from November 13-15. More photos and information on this car, lot # S122, are available at this link.
