General Motors’ full-size Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 1500 pickup trucks may soon be destined to receive a diesel engine offering, with global powertrain vice president Steve Kiefer saying the automaker could “dust off” its 4.5-liter Duramax V8. As a result, there is rumors of an oil burning Tahoe and Yukon floating around and TFLCar may have spotted a prototype which lends some substance to them.
A 2015 Suburban with the wheels from a 2015 Silverado 2500 HD was spotted alongside several other Chevrolet test vehicles in the Colorado Rockies. TFLCar says there were no other distinguishing features that may have given the vehicle away as a diesel and that the exhaust system appeared the same as on the standard gasoline Suburban. However we can’t see why it would be wearing the beefier eight-lug wheels for no reason.
There’s always one way to know for sure if it’s hiding a diesel under its hood – to listen to it. Unfortunately the car was parked when it was photographed, but hopefully this won’t be the last of this curious test car we see. Check out the photos here and let us know what you think is going on with this test car in the comments.

It’s probably a Suburban 2500 that the GMT900 generation offered: beefier suspension and rolling stock, and a better transmission mater to the 6.2L L86.
Please make a 1/2 ton with a small diesel and 3/4 with a larger diesel!
GM needs to get this ball rolling. It’ll serve as a great alternative to the standard Suburban by providing better feul efficiency and greater towing; both of which are needed to catch up to Ford’s newest Expedition. It may employ an outdated chassis but Ford has done a great job revitalizing it with the Ecoboost V6. According to Motortrend, it outperforms the Tahoe/Suburban in every way, except for interior design. GM has a chance to keep the success coming with a diesel option.
Please make a new 2500! I’ve been hanging on to my 2007 2500, and have been ready to buy a new one for two years.
Does anyone know if GMC plans to build a Suburban 2500 in the future?
