2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Crashes On The ‘Ring

Remember that video we posted just yesterday of the bright yellow 2015 Corvette C7 Z06 testing on the Nürburgring? Well, it would seem that very 2015 Z06 has already crashed on the legendary Nordschleife, later on during its testing.
Many presumed that the Z06 spotted on the ‘Ring had been brought primarily for the purpose of documenting an official lap time. This is a safe assumption, but not a safe task, as this photograph circulated on Twitter yesterday proves.
It’s important to keep in mind that the “Green Hell” is so-named for a very good reason, being one of the most notoriously challenging tracks in the motorsports universe. It’s also important to remember that no matter how good the test driver, they are exploring the performance limitations of a car that has heretofore been untried in such a demanding way, and its easy to be caught out by a yet-undiscovered nuance within the vehicle’s dynamics.
General Motors Test-Driver Jim Mero appears to be present in the photograph, and we’d be surprised if this were any bright yellow 2015 Corvette Z06 beside the one shot during testing the other day, but specific details about the crash on the ‘Ring are still unavailable.
A blue example was also spotted at a nearby gas station, so hopefully we car lovers will get an official lap time soon, regardless.

To be honest this happens more than you hear about.
I believe Toyota lost a driver there a couple years ago. This is a track unlike any other as it is far from smooth and flat as most race track.
The cars often get airborne in two places. When you start getting to a 7 min lap you are really hauling as anything under 9 mins is respectable for most drivers.
Toyota’s driver was killed in a head on a public street, I believe within the track (town of Nurburg is in the track).
That’s right. Even the name of corner was just ‘Airport’ in German. Was it ‘Stuzplatz’ kinda something I guess?
It was Sir Jackie Stewart who coined it The Green Hell after his F1 German Grand Prix victory there in the late 60’s, soon after the track was deemed unsafe for F1 races. I believe a driver died there during that Grand Prix.
If you have seen the fantastic movie ‘Rush’ by Ron Howard (or just know/remember the history), the crash the burned Niki Lauda was at the Nurburgring.
