Road & Track is featuring what they characterize as the “clearest look yet” of the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro. The new Camaro will be on the Alpha platform, which apparently has given stylists the opportunity to create a leaner, sleeker ponycar.
Of course, Chevrolet is doing their best to disguise the next-gen Camaro, so perhaps that is why this one looks awfully like the current iteration. However, Road & Track points out the front end bears “faint echoes” of the Bumblebee Camaro − is that a distraction or is that how it’s gonna be? Out back, it looks like the Camaro’s tuchus may be taller than the current generation’s. Wheels point to a high-performance variant but we know from the past that Chevrolet likely won’t release anything beyond an SS for the debut.
With “a tidier shape and Alpha bones,” there’s no doubt the 2016 Camaro will be a better (and lighter?) all-around car. To see the the actual spy photos, visit Road & Track’s website.

If it’s not broke, don’t fix it.
Rear diffuser reminds me of the Pontiac G8, the taillights are reminiscent of a Mitsubishi Lancer’s under all that camo (not bad).
“If it’s not broke, don’t fix it”
Yeah, because GM should pride itself on having the oldest, poor performing, and most technologically inferior pony car on the market. Why bother hiring engineers to apply their skilled knowledge to improve the car when you can just reheat an old platform to pass crash tests until 2020, and then reheat it again?
It’s almost like you want GM to fail.
Really guy? The all new Mustang, at best, matches the current soon to be replaced Camaro. They have and had nothing that matches the zl1 in all around performance and it looks like maybe next year they can compete with the z/28. That 5.0, still a step behind even the ls3. They were only faster due to the lighter weight and solid rear. Now with both if those gone, the Camaro loosing probably 200 lbs they would be almost as fast as the Camaro, if they decided to not use the lt-1 and keep the ls3 trucking along.
Comments like “If it’s not broke, don’t fix it” suggest that GMWS doesn’t think the Camaro is worth updating, or even leading the segment.
Stephen Marcus seems to share the same idea of lazy engineering.
“I sorta love how Dodge refuses to invest in a new Challenger.”
Stagnation kills.
Whoa! I meant the styling, Graw, not the technology they’re intending to apply on the vehicle.
Grawdaddy-Dodge is a dying brand so unique; stagnation is Challenges only options until the new Alfa platforms arrive. Even then, I highly doubt Sergio will invest in Dodge when the other FCA brands reap higher margins.
With that said, I nonetheless like the vehicle & think it’s about as good as any evolutionary design from an aesthetic standpoint.
looks sweet! I really like the stance, they have really shaved off the excess pounds nicely. No mistaking this for anything other then a Camaro and that’s been said by a lot of people on this site. as said above me if it aint broke don’t fix it and they clearly did just that. the side view now makes the mustang look a bit long, proportions look perfect on this car
Some feedback: Having a direct link at the bottom of the article pointing to the relevant external link is extremely helpful. Having to mouseover and hunt for the right link is just a royal pain… especially on a mobile device.
On the car front itself, this affirms Alpha can handle large coupes. Great. It shows GM could deliver an affordable mid-sizer in the vein of the G6 or Chevelle that is all-RWD, and could compete head-on with what Dodge has brewing up.
This picture is not really surprising – it’s just affirming.
The car is obviously very similar in size to the ATS. The wheelbase is supposedly the same(according to super chevy, car and driver, etc. So it isn’t that big of a car.
Looks a lot like current generation; then again, GM is all about evolutionary design these days which feels about as exciting as getting.socks for Christmas.
I sorta love how Dodge refuses to invest in a new Challenger. It’s oversized, guzzles gas, looks aged and is beautiful. I’ve never been into MOPAR but Challenger and Charger would be perfect Pontiacs.
Lots of irony in this. Presumably evolution design is lame and stale but changing nearly nothing is the ticket? Sales indicate that Chevy has the best design. I’m not wild about the current Camaro in any but the highest trims, but hopefully the next one changes that.
Does anybody remember the time when GM was essentially testing a c7 vette under c6 skin? I guarantee you guys this isn’t the final design
When is the camaro expected to be unveiled? New York auto show? Before/after? Thanks
I don’t like that there are reflectors on the rear or the deck-mounted CHMSL. (It should be hidden from view, except for when the brake lights are on, Ed Welburn. It, like the reflectors, are not styling attributes!) And I’m going to go out and predict that a LOT of people aren’t going to like the front end and what looks like a chunky c-post, thanks to the size and the shape of the side glass.
Let them finish the car before you get too over the top.
In the end half of you will hate it and half will love it. After a few months on the street 80% plus of you will want to buy one or wish you could. We see this every time and just saw it on the C7 that is off the charts in sales the last I looked.
Most all of us have seen this game several times and know how it works out.
Some of you need to learn more about what is going on here.
#1 this is the new Alpha platform and it is not carrying anything over from the present car. Even the engines will see some changes with DI and even a Turbo set up. So this is not a warmed over older car.
#2 this car is a little shorter than the Impala with a similar wheel base to the present car. It will be a little more narrow and lower.
#3 It will loose weight and no more 4000 pound Camaro’s even with a V8. The Turbo 4 may tip in 3400-3500.
#4 this car will be easier to see out of and the lower fender lines. The rear will still have some blind spots but that is a given for more styling.
#5 The styling should not surprise any of us. GM stated the styling would be somewhat evolutionary. I also pointed out the Bumble Bee was a hint as some to the queues we would see. Even the present car has pointed the way here in the nose area.
#6 the head lights and taillights are not production yet so do not get too excited on them. They are often some of the last items to be added to the mules due to testing for the government.
#7 GM is in a catch 22 here. If they don’t change it half of you complain and if they do change it a lot then the other half of you complain. There always is more risk in change too. GM did just what Ford did and evolve the styling to be more efficient and more practical to the new task this platform was given.
In the end you will get the next Camaro that fixes many of the past problems like too much weight, Too hard to see out of, It will have a better interior, Better handling, Faster and more refinement to a level never seen in a Camaro before.
Let them finish the car and I expect that we will see the finished product in Detroit in January.
Keep in mind the C7 and what they did to it with less of a make over. The base car is more refined and has performance nearly matching the better Z06 of the last design. We will see this in the new car.
Read the reports on the Alpha under the ATS and CTS and learn what it can do. The Camaro will take it to the next level as it does not need to meet Cadillac expectations and they can take a few more liberties.
In the end just because it looks like the older car do not judge it to be like the older car. This is a whole different ball game here just in a similar looking package.
The Zeta Camaro was the Camaro of compromise and the best they could do under the Chapter 11. This is the car they really wanted to do from the start.
GM needs to come up with a great design rather than an ugly redo of a 69 Camaro. I think the 69 actually looks better
Let the camp come off and the detail will show this car may have roots in the 69 but details in today.
The tail will be more curved like a 4th gen but unique to it own,
Would rather see the 1970-81 design. For me, that is the iconic Camaro/Firebird.
What’s up with the 4 X 4 crossover ground clearance?
Welcome to the real world!
The car is high enough to clear most curbs in the real world. There will be enough Z/28 models with broken front air dams once it is added later.
I sincerely believe this is not the new body. I’m thinking some early 70s split bumper influence. that’s what I have saw online. this is a warm over of the current car. As is, I say the legendary mustang will regain it sales title by a wide margin.
