Go, Speed Racer! Go!
…To eBay. If you’ve ever wanted to gain entry to the world of NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) drag racing, here’s your chance; a fully-prepped Oldsmobile Achieva racecar has surfaced for auction.
The car has an all tube-frame chassis, 7.50 certified until December 2015, MSD 7AL Capacitive Discharge Ignition, two Optima red top batteries, 4 gallon fuel cell, and all the other goodies one might need for tearing up the quarter-mile on a Saturday night. Except for an engine; it’s set up for a Chevy Small Block (what else?).
Needless to say, this car is not street legal. Also, very likely rubbish in anything but straight line. But in terms of saving on the parts and labor of constructing a dragster – not to mention the headache of setting oneself up to clear all the daunting regulations – this Oldsmobile Achieva might just be a great deal.
Of course, seeing a machine like this crop up on eBay – one which holds so much potential for destruction, injury, and even death – certainly makes one wonder how the sale of such cars isn’t more stringently controlled. That Joe Sixpack could anonymously buy such a beast casually on the internet without a hiccup is slightly shocking.
And yet, somehow, so quintessentially American. God bless it.
