Insane 10-Second GMC Typhoon Causes A Stir The Drag Strip: Video

The GMC Typhoon is one 90s mid-size SUV that needs no introduction. It and its pickup-truck twin brother the Syclone have developed a strong following, mostly due to the performance dished out by their shared 4.3-liter turbocharged V6 engine and accompanying all-wheel drive system.

That powertrain also helped the car gain recognition at the drag strip, and you’ll learn why by taking one look at the White Typhoon in the video below. We don’t have information or specs on the manic mid-size SUV, but it appears to have a heavily upgraded version of the stock V6 turbo engine. So upgraded in fact that it easily runs a 10.7-second quarter-mile at 127 mph. For reference, Car and Driver once recorded a stock Typhoon doing a 14.1 second quarter-mile at 95 mph.

Despite its all-wheel drive system, the Typhoon’s launch is still a little squirrely. We’re willing to bet this SUV could easily inch its way into the mid-10s with a cleaner launch, though that’s probably a little easier said than done considering the massive amount of torque the V6 is likely putting to the pavement. Check it out in the video below.

  1. Best part…watching the Honda get beat by an old Chevy SUV. Poor Honda…

  2. The best one was the Sonoma John Lingenfelter built. It was a 1998 that looked all stock with AWD and a Twin Turbo LS engine. It ran on the street just fine and would turn 9 second quarter miles. He had to put a sump in the transmission as the oil was getting flung back and the tranny was sucking air.

He had a 235 MPH Corvette but loved to drive his Truck more.

It was crashed after his death by someone who bought It. They lost it at the track and rolled it.
