Back in 2004, when the Corvette Z06 was a coupe with a different roofline than the standard Corvette, Chevrolet introduced the Z16 Le Mans Commemorative Edition. The package consisted of Le Mans Blue paint with silver and red stripes plus a carbon fiber hood (a first for America), but otherwise the C5 was a typical 405-horse Z06. Now you can buy the very first one at Mecum’s Chicago auction on October 11, 2014.
Created to commemorate Corvette Racing’s consecutive 1-2 class finishes at the 2001 and 2002 24 Hours of Le Mans, only 2,025 of the Le Mans Commemorative Edition were built. But this one is even more special because it is a WD1 “pilot” vehicle with VIN 100013, which means it was practically a pre-production car that received extra care. After its build, this Z06 was used for a variety of promotional activities for Chevrolet’s marketing needs. Today, it sports just 853 miles.
The Mecum Chicago auction will be held on October 9-11 at the Schaumburg Convention Center (not far from O’Hare). You’ll be able to catch the festivities on NBCSN (Sports Network) but, better yet, you should visit the auction and be tempted.
