The all-new Buick Envision SUV will make its world debut this Thursday, August 28th in China. And though The General has been labeling the crossover as midsize, it will actually be a compact vehicle — as the dimensions below clearly show. In fact, the overall exterior dimensions of the 2016 Envision are very much similar to the Chevrolet Orlando.
The similarity makes sense given that the Envision rides on the new compact D2XX platform, the successor to the Delta 2 architecture utilized by the Chevrolet Cruze, Buick Verano/Excelle GT/XT, and the Opel/Vauxhall Astra. So, in the tables below, we’ve made available the basic measurements of wheelbase, length, width, and height, in both inches and millimeters, for the Envision as well as other GM vehicles — including the Chevrolet Equinox, GMC Terrain, Cadillac SRX, Chevrolet Captiva Sport, as well as the Chevrolet Orlando and Cruze.
Note that the width measurements are without mirrors, and that height measurements are without roof rails.

It is not the outside dims that are important here but the interior dims. The question we all have is how well is the interior packaged compared the present Nox that is not packages all that well?
Also will there be different sizes on the other models as there was with the Cadillac vs. Nox and Terrain and the Captiva and Vue. They all were different sizes.
Sure, interior dimensions are important. But even the most space-efficient designs are ultimately conditional on the exterior footprint. The point is that, if properly space efficient, GM’s new wave of compact CUVs shouldn’t need to be bigger than other compact CUVs in the segment, which has been the case with the Equinox and Terrain.
That is my point. Even if the vehicle is a little smaller here or there they can pick up room with better packaging.
My terrain has a lot of wasted space in the dash area as the driver is a long ways from base of the windshield. The rear strut towers are very large and impede on the cargo area. Also while the sliding rear seat is a great sales feature it is not really a needed item. Generally you set the rear seat once and never move it again, Even all the way forward people well over 6 feet have little issue sitting back there.
The reasons these are issues is that the Theta is a very old platform pre GM bankruptcy design and now today they can afford to do it right and not have to adopt such an old design as they did for the firs Nox and Vue and then adapt it to the present ones.
I still think it will be important for the GMC to feel more like a truck and the Nox feel more like a car in styling.
I still think the SRX and Terrain may have a longer wheel base. Just call it a gut feeling bases on where they will be built.
Yupp, agreed.
Regarding the SRX and Terrain: it likely won’t for the third-generation, but the SRX needs to go to Alpha, while there is considerable opportunity for the Terrain to take on the new Cherokee head-to-head.
On a somewhat related note, I think it’s an advantage that the Envision will the exterior proportions of a compact. Problem with the current Nox/Terrain is that, though compact inside, their midsize exterior dimensions turn off many who are actually looking for a compact vehicle. I’ve seen quite a few shoppers (many of them female) say that they prefer the new Ford Escape because it’s smaller and more easy to maneuver.
Sorry they are not going to stray from the SRX AWD/FWD formulas it is in direct competition with the Lexus that dominated this segment till the SRX came out on the Theta.
Now with that said that does not mean they can also do a Alpha based that would replace the SUV that was being considered on the Lambda. We heard a SUV was killed and I believe it was the Lambda version and I can see it being replaced with a Alpha or Omega.
The deal is Cadillac made it clear a while ago they will have may SUV and CUV models and versions as this segment is going to get crazy. They will need both FWD and RWD with the joint AWD models as both of these drives have been selling very well.
Just have to wait and see but I expect both to come to market. Cadillac is not going to abandon the number of sales they have had on the SRX. But I do see them taking a new model to retry the RWD and see if they can make it work this time.
So it’s size in between the theta swb and theta lwb?
Theoretically speaking, there are four Theta platforms:
1. Captiva Sport/Saturn Vue
2. Equinox/Terrain
3. International-market Captiva/Captiva 7
4. Cadillac SRX (Theta Premium)
Luckily, the Envision is a compact through and through… not a compact with the dimensions of a midsize.
I was just referring to the captiva sport and equinox since captiva sport is the swb and equinox is lwb of it. But compare it to like the Lexus NX or the dimension of the crv?
Can’t wait for the new Envision. Test drove the Encore and loved everything about Encore except the size–tiny!! It would be great for single or couple or maybe one child. Its just too cramped in back seat for more than one kid and definately not three (my 2 plus niece with me at test driven 🙂 the Enclave is way more than I need personally. Hoping the price will be between the tiny Encore and huge Enclave. Anyone know when they will hit US market? I’ve seen fall 2014, early 2015. Exterior is gorgeous too!
We should start thinking of that as mid-sized. The definitions are changing.
