How To Program The Universal Garage Door Opener On GMC Vehicles (With Video)

More commonly known as the garage door opening system, the Universal Home Remote can be highly convenient, as it provides a way replace up to three remote control transmitters used to activate garage door openers and Home security systems. But as it often happens, setting it up to work with your garage can be quite the challenge. To help with that, we’re providing the following guide on programming the system.

  1. Press and hold the two outside buttons at the same time, releasing only when the Universal Home Remote indicator light begins to flash. You’ll need to press these for a maximum of 20 seconds.
  2. Hold your Universal Home transmitter about 1-3 inches away from the Universal Home Remote buttons while keeping the indicator light in view. At the same time, press and hold the button to be programmed and the handheld transmitter button. Do not release either button until the indicator light on the Universal Home Remote flashes slowly at first and then rapidly after a successful program.
  3. Press and hold the newly-trained Universal Home Remote button and observe the indicator light.
    • If the indicator light stays on continuously, the programming is complete.
    • If the Universal Home Remote indicator light blinks rapidly for two seconds and then turns to a constant light, then continue with the following steps:
  4. Go to the garage door opener receiver motor head unit and locate the learn or smart button.
  5. Firmly press the button and release the smart button. After you press this button, you now have 30 seconds to return to the vehicle. Once back in the vehicle, firmly press and hold the button on the Universal Home Remote that you selected previously for 2 seconds. Then, release.
  6. If the garage door does not move, repeat steps 4 and 5 a second and third time.

  1. Followed instructions, nothing worked. 2015 Terrain Denali and a 1996 Overhead Door model 930/950 opener. Removed remote keypad from outside of the garage door and activated it while holding it under the Denali universal home remote buttons while pushing one of them. The light by the Denali buttons finally blinked rapidly! I then pressed the program button on the overhead garage door motor (time sensitive) and then pressed and held the same Denali universal home remote button. Success! Simple No?

  3. terrible, terrible product and instructions–=so bad that two college-degreed technical professionals (we are in high tech mfg) cannot program a 2012 GMC Yukon Denali or 2016 Subaru Forester, wasting too much time on a precious Sunday trying to figure out NOT-USER-FRIENDLY product and instructions that are worse

  4. I have a 2016 Tahoe and programed the electric gate (works great) and the garage door
and the garage door only works when my 2016 Tahoe is positioned at a 45 degree angle from the garage door. I have programed both of the right hand buttons for the garage door and they both work the same way. Is there any fix for this ?

      1. I too fought with this for many attempts and frustrated. Here’s what worked for me.
Replace your batteries. Mine were 1 yr old and measured 11.7 V and they worked the garage door from 150 ft but – the new batteries measured 12.5 V.
Erase the opener in the car/truck. Erase the opener in your garage.
Reprogram your openers to the garage door opener. Should take 2-3 sec each. I have 3 remotes and they all programmed quickly.
Major point: Turn your ignition to the “ACC/On” position. Do NOT turn it all the way to the Start/RUN position.
Hold your original remote close to the Chevy opener button and do their ‘press the button you want to program’ and then your remote button. It took 3-4 sec to get the rapid flash and done. Wow, after hours of effort and concern it worked.
The key points are 1) the new batteries may help the frequency and the strength (I’m sure there are those that would disagree – but prove to me it didn’t help.), 2) Use the “ACC/ON” position, not the Start/RUN position.

  6. I have a 2016 GMC Yukon and I have tried to connect the Homelink to my garage door opener. My garage door opener is an Alistar motor, BUT, controlled by a Linear digital Delta-3 reciever….I attempted all of the set ups in the manual and others found on line. My garage door opener does NOT have a “learn” button either on the motor or the receiver. So WTF? Inside the remote and the receiver there are 8 buttons that can toggle from on to off positions to allow for many frequencies unique to the door opener. The remote and receiver must be matched to work. I simply changed a couple of the positions of the toggle switches both on the remote and the receiver. Went back and ran the pairing protocol. And it worked.

  9. Have a 2016 Acadia Denali, programmed homelink, works only when vehicle is in garage. If outside with the door down it does not work. If outside and the door is open homelink will close door. Any ideas?

  10. yes finally the solution is revealed . All steps shown in video are correct and valid. However , there is one more step to programming and that is noting the color of the your learn button on the garage door opener.

Once you have done the recommended procedure then you must press the selected button in your vehicle a number of times to pair with the door opener.
color times to press vehicle selcted button years opener type
    mega code 1 97-current linear
    orange/red 2 97-03 chamberlain
    purple 3 05-currrent chamberlain
    green 4 93-96 chamberlain

    intellicode 6 95-current Genie

    1. This is my issue as well. The opener has worked to date. We put in a new opener and can not get any lights to illuminate in the suburban. I have tried erasing but again no illumination of indicator lights. Any success on your end?

  18. I have two GMC trucks, Sierra and Yukon. I can only program the Universal remote in one of them. I have 3 garage doors. I program my Sierra to open each door. Worked great. Then I programmed the Yukon the same way and that worked great but now my Sierra won’t open the doors. So I reprogrammed the Sierra. Now the Yukon doesn’t work. Any fix around this?

  20. I just bought a new 2020 Sierra 1500. I had a 2012 Toyota Tacoma and was so frustrated with the fact that the programmable remote system was always hot and active even when the truck was locked up and keys were in the house. Problem? DEFINETLY! If you ever park outside your garage, a quick smashed window or pried door allows immediate access into your garage or worse your home. BAD DESIGN! I was anxious to program my new GMC fully expecting a higher quality of security. Well so much for that! SAME DAMN ISSUE! C’mon GM & Toyota! Can’t wire the system any better that that!? I quickly disabled the buttons and went back to carrying my old remote with me. My son-in-law just bought a new Dodge Ram 2500 diesel and it works like it should. Truck off, fob removed, dead remote buttons! Holy crap, who designs this stuff!?!? They don’t think the issues through that’s for sure!

  22. I have a 2015 GMC Sierra and the instructions worked like a charm. Short, concise and spot on. Took me about 3 minutes to program both garage doors. I only had to use the garage remote opener, I did not have to hit the learn button on the garage door opener.
    Thanks for your help.

  23. I have opted to disable the OEM garage door opener in my 2020 Sierra. If you ever choose to park outside for the night your home is at risk of an invasion entry. The opener is still active even with the truck locked and no key inside. Just pop the window and someone is in your garage or worse your living quarters. Very poor design!!! Just as well leave the front door unlocked or the key in it!! Not for me!!

  25. problem programing Homelink on 2024 GMC AT4.
    Homelink Rep phone response

    1. Went through homelink/GM programming procedures for Chamberlin Liftmaster. Bothe handheld remote and “learn” button: Didn’t work
    2. She said remove LED bulbs from Garage opener, LED can interfere with signal. Didn’t work
    3. She said the hand remote I had, probably an aftermarket from years ago, was not compatible with homelink, I’d need an actual Chamberlin Liftmaster remote (haven’t gotten one yet) However the remote I have works the garage opener perfectly so not sure why that’s an issue.
I have a 2021 Lexus that programs immediately using the learn button
I had a Ram PU that programmed immediately using the learn button
So I hae a 70k (MSRP) GM vehicle that the garage door opener won’t work.. very disappointed in GM

    1. Well, personally I don’t use or recommend those factory garage door buttons. I’ve had a 2012 Toyota Tacoma and a 2020 GMC Sierra that both were wired so that those buttons are active and hot even when the vehicle is shutoff and the key fob removed. Terrible security issue if you ever leave your vehicle parked outside. It’s like leaving your garage door and ultimately your home wide open to anyone who wants to gain entry. Just pop a vehicle window out and open the garage door! NO THANKS! A terrible design that I don’t recommend using. I either carry a handheld removable remote or use my phone app for our MyQ Chamberlain opener.
