General Motors Files Trademark Application For ‘Chevrolet Bolt’

General Motors has filed a trademark application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for the terms Chevrolet Bolt and Bolt.

Both applications were filed on August 5th, 2014 and both specify “Motor land vehicles, namely automobiles” as the goods and services category. The trademark filings follow similar applications by GM for the terms Elevation and Sierra Elevation.

Chevrolet Bolt Trademark Summary
TRADEMARK FILING DATE SERIAL NUMBER
CHEVROLET BOLT AUGUST 5, 2014 86357523
BOLT AUGUST 5, 2014 86357513

It should be noted that both Bolt and Chevrolet Bolt sound similar to Volt and Chevrolet Volt, the brand’s unique extended-range electric vehicle, making us wonder about the probability of the name being assigned to a production vehicle. 1. I’m guessing…..Code 130R with gas/electric RWD setup? Make it go 70+ miles full electric then kick into gas/electric mode. That little shit would rip!! You would loose any possibility of manual fun, but for a small coupe with loads of torque it would be a grin as a daily commuter. Just daydreaming. And Yes, I got all of that 4:00 pm daydream from that 4 letter word Bolt, not to be confused with Volt which makes you think Chevy Volt, but its Bolt….. Its a fast Volt!!! EEhhh.

  2. Nissan uses Usain Bolt in their GTR commercial, claiming “Bolt performance”. Maybe GM thought this was too close to “Volt” performance to some ears. Usain is the only owner of that name in the end. At least GM won’t have to worry anyone stealing their engine family names, why name an engine along the lines of “coyote” (a smart predator that loves to run?), or “IFORCE” (intelligent AND strong?), when you can name it EEEE COH TECK THREE.

  3. Could there be some kind of electric hybrid performance car be in the works like a Lightning Bolt?

Hard to say on so little information here.

I am expecting with the news the Camaro is getting a turbo 4 option the smaller RWD coupe is now off the table and the new car will be a FWD coupe with performance options. This could be a possible name option here.

Not a great name but better than Nuts.

    1. Why not name the FWD coupe, which would probably be based on the Cruze anyway, Cruze Coupe?

The Bolt should be a high-performance Volt.

      1. The problem is that while a performance Volt may appeal to some of us here Chevy needs to focus on extending the range more and getting more MPG the true mission of the car first. That is it’s primary appeal and it needs to grow this more.

Besides in electric mode it runs pretty well with the instant torque.

Also Chevy needs to find ways to reduce the price vs. more power right now.

  4. My first thought was high performance vehicle using Voltec, but on second thought I think it’s just protection from a similar name.

  5. I’m only kidding, but it’s what you do when your Volt fails you. You Volt and Bolt. Other wise I kinda like JimmyRigged and scott3’s opinions.

It is bad enough we have already have a Dodge Ram and a Impact.

    1. If you “Dodge” a “Ram”, you avoid an “Impact”!

  7. I hope the Chevrolet Bolt will be an EREV Crossover vehicle, but it could also be the a rumored Full Electric Sonic based vehicle. I have read that GM will move its all electric technology currently in the Spark EV to the Sonic’s Gamma platform because it is built in the US and would allow GM to take full advantage of some type of government incentive as well as its new battery producing facility here in the US. It has also been reported that a Sonic electric would allow for a larger battery to perhaps achieve GM stated goal of providing 200 mile electric range car for the masses to challenge Telsla’s long promised $30K electric sedan.
