General Motors 4G LTE Off To Strong Start

Ninety-eight percent of General Motors customers with 4G LTE-equipped vehicles are activating the service’s three month/3 gigabyte trial period, said GM global connected consumer president Mary Chan.

Speaking with CNET, Chan described the acceptance rate of the trial service as “scary high”; however, in order to be considered a success, the company will need a high conversion rate of trial service users to paying subscribers.

Chan told CNET that she thinks competitive pricing to wireless data plans and “[t]he ability to connect up to seven devices — including laptops, tablets, or anything else able to pick up a Wi-Fi signal — justifies the service.” She also believes the service’s “option to buy a daily pass or a block of data through an OnStar representative” will help popularize in-car 4G LTE.

With “an opportunity to sell its 4G LTE-connected car service to businesses that deal with vehicles, such as the trucking industry…[and] rental car industry,” which could offer the service to customers at a premium, Chan sees a 4G LTE  future where the service can be used to “manage a car’s health” and “send over the-air-updates” to continually upgrade a vehicle’s systems – not to mention be a driving force in bringing semi-autonomous cars to market.

  1. What’s Onstar’s free trial rate?

I’m still not sure why you wouldn’t use your phone’s unlimited data plan and hotspot from that.

Just like bluetoothing from your smart phone to make calls.
