Community Question: For $80K, What General Motors Car Do You Buy?

When your budget is $80,000, there are no shortage of cars on sale for you to choose from, especially if you turn to the used car market. We’re going to focus on General Motors’ new offerings though, which also gives us a good deal of cars to choose from in the $80K and under range. What you pick depends on what you want, comfort, performance or maybe a small mix of both.

Personally, our money would go to either a well-equipped 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Z51 or a fifth-generation Camaro Z/28. The Camaro stickers at $75,000, while the Corvette might ring in for a little less depending on what options you choose. Other potential options include a base-model 2015 Corvette Z06 with none of the fancy carbon fiber Z07 pieces or carbon brakes, a 420 horsepower 2014 Cadillac CTS Vsport, a 2015 Cadillac Escalade also with minimal options or a current-generation 2014 Cadillac CTS-V, to name a few.

So what would you have? Give it some consideration and give us a shout in the comments.

  2. Depends just on what you want.

the Z51 is the most for the money.

The Z/28 is the most for true limited edition and potential collectors value as long as the 6th gen does not blow it out of the water in a year or so.

Would you be happy with a Z06 if it is gutted? If yes then that is your car but if you want the better brakes and other bits then you may not be happy.

The CTS V sport is the best if you want 4 doors.

Or you can just buy a Camaro SS or SS sedan and a Colorado and have a car for the days of snow and a car for the days of sun for that price.

There is no single right answer here for everyone collectively. This is a question each of us has an answer and they are all correct for each of us based on our own wants and needs.

This question is like asking what your favorite color is and who could get that one wrong?
In time GM will add more things to the mix and it will give us that many more options..

    1. I always hope to here a gm bring back the chevelle or nova shaped to the 1970 body. In my opinion GM should create a small 2 door coupe in the 19 – 23 thousand range with 300 hp call it the nova. GM does not produce attractive and affordable cars that will attract young drivers. Cruze, sonic and Malibu. Do not attract young people. This is why these young drivers buy shit box Volkswagon’s, 90- 2000 honda civic, 3 series BMW or audi with over 100k on the motor. I just hope one day I can read GM is bringing back the Chevelle with a nice 454 v8.

      1. Yah, like a GM version of the BMW 2 series. Or just to make the camaro more nimble and easier to see out of.

      2. Well we are getting a smaller more nimble Camaro and we may get a smaller lower priced coupe based on the Cadillac getting a smaller car than the ATS with RWD. They have to share it some where.

Sorry you will not get much for $19-23 anymore as that is just about entry level anymore. But there is room from $23K-$30K.

I love the Chevelle as much as anyone as we have had 67-68-69-70-73-and a 68 SS in the family over the years. While they were great cars GM needs to focus on just building something new and original as we can only live in the past for so lone before life and the market passes you up.

The 55 Chevy was a great car too but if all Chevy did was retro version of it since 1955 we would have missed a lot of really great cars along the way like the Chevelle if they did not create new and great cars.

Retro is nice for Nostalgia but you can not live in the past forever. Also you can not hide behind retro for ever as an crutch for not creating good new original designs.

The fact is Chevy needs to create the next classics and move forward. With good talent and support of management to let them do what they can do GM can produce the next 55 Chevy in the next 5 years at people in 2050 will want to look back on fondly.

  5. $80000 buys more than one. For summer a mystic green SS. For the snow a black Malibu LT3.
