The 2016 Buick Envision is the latest entry to the highly contested compact crossover market. First launching in China, and then the United States, the 2016 Envision appears to have both the Lexus RX and Audi Q3 squarely in sight, thanks to high end amenities, and an all-new all-wheel-drive system. And while we’re describing the Chinese-spec model, it’s undoubtedly going to give us an idea of what to expect when it enters North America next year. Just like the all-new Chevrolet Cruze.
And like the 2016 Chevrolet Cruze (2015 in China), the first-ever Buick Envision debuts with GM’s all-new D2xx compact vehicle architecture. But the 2016 Envision will utilize engines outside of the new Cruze’s arsenal, such as the 2.0L Ecotec motor that in this application yields 191 kW (256 hp) at 5,500 rpm and peak torque of 353 Nm (260 lb-ft) at 5,300 rpm. This boosted four-pot is equipped to a new start/stop “DSS” six-speed transmission, giving the crossover an official, class-leading combined fuel economy of 8.8 L/100 km (or 26.73 mpg). Active grille shutters also help with fuel economy. We hope to have more information on the DSS transmission and additional motors soon.
That power can be channeled to a next-generation AWD system that represents a first from General Motors. All of the torque can either be sent to the front wheels, or the rear wheels, depending on the circumstance. Just like Audi’s quattro. GM says the new system features two electronically controlled multi-plate clutches in the rear axle automatically distribute torque from the front to rear wheels and between the rear wheels as needed. As a result, it should translate to more responsive, flexible, comfortable and efficient driving over more conventional all-wheel-drive systems. The handling department sees MacPherson struts up front, an independent four-link suspension system in the back, and a full front subframe. Meanwhile, the FlexRide system can be toggled between Normal, Tour, Sport and Off-Road modes.
On the inside, the Buick Envision comes with a “human-computer interactive platform” specifically designed for Buick. This function allows for passenger smartphone connectivity and incorporates an eight-inch high-definition touchscreen, multifunctional buttons on the steering wheel, a touchpad and voice control. The Envision is also the first vehicle in its segment in China to come standard with Active Noise Cancellation technology, which should make it one of the most sound-proof rides in its segment. For convenience’s sake, the rear power liftgate can be completely or partially opened by adjusting the opening height in three levels. Fully contented Buick Envision models feature a foot-sensing function to allow hands-free opening of the liftgate. Other amenities include a standard large panoramic sunroof, front power seats with heating, cooling and ventilation functions; and a heated sport steering wheel.
Initially, the Buick Envision will be offered in AWD Elite, AWD Luxury, AWD Versatile Flagship and AWD Versatile Sporty Flagship. Which we’re sure roll off the tongue way better in Mandarin. Lastly, the five launch colors will be Snowy White, Glacier Silver, Pearl Black, Topaz Brown and Sky Purple.

Interesting, the fourth picture shows an off road setting. I hardly think so and they should get serious as this is no off roader. Look how low it is under full passenger load. On the plus side of things I think it really looks good, much better than the preview photos. Anything but that white for me. I’d like to know for a surety whether or not this will make it stateside, not just somebody’s speculation for an answer. 🙂
I agree it looks pretty good, but will be better in any other colour. The interior looks great!
Envision will make it to NA because this space is not covered by GMC Terrain. Also, the segment is white hot in terms of sales and GM doesn’t want to miss out.
With Audi like AWD, this will be sold as an Opel, too. GM would be insane to build a unique vehicle for Europe given how European Envision already looks.
Time will tell…
Should this even compare to the Lexus NX?

It’s a sharp vehicle. This model will sell like hot cakes.
What has me worried is I have seen this car posted on some busy web sites and few comments are made outside of here.
I expected this to generate a lot of comments but few people are talking about it good or bad.
With the Encore doing well I would expect this one should do better if priced right. I just question how will it effect the Enclave sales as it get more and more expensive. The Encore is doing so well as people are down sizing a lot with the economy and they can at least keep the luxury aspect with the Encore vs. many of the other models in the segment.
Then how will they differ the Terrain to not over lap?
A lot to consider and watch here.
I like it and I hope it is a home run.
Scott, I’ve noticed the same thing. I’ve also noticed that Envision is that first non “pretty” Buick debuted in some years.
The car lacks symmetry, especially in the rear. I loved the concept! I love that out can do off road like Jeep (something really needed on the next Terrain). I love the size. I dislike the last generation Benz-like butt.
ahaaaa. Some think that those comments, and the number is nothing. Forums are usually among the same people, and if included at all anywhere in the number of comments in forums it is so small and the number is not determined absolutely nothing. if this forum would have been even 1 million comments on a variety of people would be a very small number. how many people are in America. how much is iniemsi Europe. how many people live in China.
aahhaaaaaa
My point is like over at Autoblog there have up till last night 0 post on two stories on this vehicle. Even over there generally you have some folks just posting GM sucks or the like but even the haters are not commenting. It is odd for them not to have at least 15-20 post in one day on any topic and if it is GM even the haters spew just to spew.
I would have expected at least some GM fans to comment or say bring it here.
It just struck me as odd. When was the last time you saw a GM product that no one said anything about?
This is not bad or good just odd.
It its a generally non descript people mover, especially when dressed in white. I don’t see GM fans (or any other) making orgasmic comments.
With that said, it is a very solid offering no less impressive than MKC.
I do age that too many options could harm Enclave sales. This could be especially true if GMC uses Chevy and not Caddy underpinning.
spy photos and film test offroad water show . one articel china is 1150 comment envision

Opel’s new design language is MONZA, as has been said. but it’s not bad to.
