Jay Leno is a man who needs no introduction when it comes to the automobile. The famed comedian and television host now focuses on his YouTube channel – Jay Leno’s Garage – where he shows off rare and expensive pieces of automotive machinery. Leno’s channel also gets people from the industry to talk about their vehicles. In Jay’s newest video, former General Motors Chairman Bob Lutz stops by to show off the new Via Motors VTRUX.
Leno and Lutz discuss some of the astonishing characteristics of the VTRUX (of which Lutz is a Via Motors board member). According to him, the extended range electric truck (aka “hybrid”) packs a 4.3L V6 mated to a generator that allows the vehicle to obtain 100 mpg and achieve a range of 300 miles total. The generator can also be used to drive power tools or power your house during a power outage. If the truck looks familiar, it’s because Via Motors uses the Chevrolet Silverado and reengineers it as its own.
After their conversation, Leno heads out on the open road to test the VTRUX around town. The most interesting aspect is the fact that Leno seems to like the vehicle a lot, stating that it doesn’t feel like a hybrid vehicle, which is the best complement a hybrid car can receive.
