Replacement 5th Generation Chevrolet Camaro Key Design Loses Switchblade Style: Video

General Motors recalled every 5th generation Chevrolet Camaro ever built last month due to a faulty ignition switch which may allow the key to be knocked loose if it is bumped by the driver’s knee. Fixes for GM’s other ignition switch recalls, including the one which plagued Chevrolet Cobalts, Saturn Ions and other small cars, have so far proved to be complicated with backordered parts and a prolonged repair schedule. However the fix for the Camaro is simple and easy, if a YouTube video dug up by LSXTV is any indication.
In the video, Bob Stall Chevrolet employee Mike Polite shows the Camaro’s ‘switchblade’ key with the key element removed and attached to a normal fixed key. This will reduce the chances of the key from being bumped loose and because it’s easier to produce keys than it is entire ignition switches and ignition cylinders, Camaro owners should be able to have their car fixed in a reasonable amount of time.
Polite says the fix won’t stop the key from being bumped out of the ignition switch completely, but will reduce the chances of drivers hitting the key with their knee as the conventional key is smaller than the ‘switchblade’ style fob.

Make it keyless entry and push start. WHY THE HELL UR STICKING TO TRADITIONAL WAY.
My uncle has a 2014 Camaro and isn’t very computer savvy so was unaware of the fact that his key truly didn’t need to be altered. Took his car in and now has the switchblade keyfob which is now keyless and a separate key and let me tell you… He is livid, paying nearly $500 a month to drive this vehicle he states that the key was one of the things he really liked about the car and now Chevrolet’s moronic excuse of a fix was to tear apart and halfass his new key… His thought, and mine is, if your going to make him have a separate key, why not create a remote like the old one and not have him carrying around a heavy switchblade that is SUPPOSE to include a key on his keys? Im not a chevy fan and this is just one of the many reasons why…
The key is not the problem… It is imposible for your knee to hit the key and turn it off. I bought a 2014 Camaro RS with the new key and the first time I drove on the highway the engine shut off at 70 MPH and almost got into an accident. It has happened 5 more times. I have gone thru arbiteration with the Better Business Bureau (A complete farse. The arbitrator didn’t even know there was a recall on the car) and am now going through the Florida Lemon Law to get a buy back from G.M. If your car dies contact the NHTSA and report it before some of us die. This is the only we can force G.M. to acknowledge their responsibility for the deaths of hundreds of customers who were dumb enough to buy a Chevy.
It needs to be a more complete solution instead of this bandaid . Keyless ignition works for me or a key that shoots out of the fob .
I too took my car in, the letter stated ignition switch not a key , what a trick then I found out that , there’s a opt out deal, but they don’t have to tell you, but any way I have one key I switched bk in the fob,, u can get the pin and a blank key blade ,, u only need the pin,,, the key they switched , was hard to get off , then I used fire gel,, that shit feel off like wax ,,, I put the key blade bk in the fob, and put pin bk,,, like it’s soppose to,, and what idiot hit there key with there knee , wtf,, u moran
Took my car in to get the new key, had no idea that it was going to be a separate key. Looks very tacky, I should of look at the video before I took it in. Disappointed!
I have a 2010 Chevy Camaro SS. I LOVE this car. It has been my daily driver most of the time. When I received the original recall I inquired as to how the recall would change my key. I was told that it would be switched out with 2 standard keys and a fobs. At that time I opted not to switch it, thinking that with the research I saw it was people that had a lot of keys on the keychain that had a problem. I use a carabiner clip for all my keys and take off the single key for the vehicle I’m driving. One saying was out shopping with family about a hour from home and my original key fell apart in my hand. I was stuck, unable to turn on the car. The whole key was in pieces. My options were call a tow truck and leave the rest of my family stranded or find someone willing to pick us up, go home and get a ride back to my car with my backup key. (Just prior to the recall one of my original keys fell apart and I had to purchase a new one at full price at the dealership.) So now I am desperate to get the key fixed so I don’t end up stranded again. I schedule the appointment approximately 3 days out, but when I go I can’t get the recall done because the key is not in stock. When I get the service I am handed 2 keys and the original fob with the flip stick removed. I am told this is my only fob. I am told that without it I can do everything I need to with the key if I don’t have the fob backup. (that is a major concern for me). I even ask about the trunk. I am told yes, I can use it on the trunk. So here are the issues – without the key fob, as soon as you insert the key in the door the ALARM will beep until it is up into the ignition. You can not open the TRUNK unless you open the door and push the button inside the drivers door. So if your trying to put groceries in the trunk you have to get in and insert the key or listen to the alarm go off. You can not LOCK the doors by pushing the lock button and closing the door, it is set to automatically unlock when the door closes. You can not unlock the passenger door with the key, this is a issue for me since I have a family member that is handicapped and this is the primary vehicle I use when we go out since it is low and easier for her to get into. In summary, I am very disappointed in the change. I feel like it is only a matter of time until this fob will fall apart like my previous 2. At this point I have not driven the car since bringing it back from the dealership over a month ago. I’m still annoyed that they didn’t replace the key with either 2 new fobs or a key that has the fob as part of the key. I don’t need the fob technology if the car works without it, but this car was not made that way. It is necessary to the use of the vehicle.
how much did we PAY for that FOB anyway….I’m sure it was a bit pricey to say the least…so we should be reimbursed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! seriously
It’s one of the things I love about my ZL1.
My knee is not even close to the key. Its almost possible for me to to do. Rebel..
