Russia’s weakening economy is proving to be a tough obstacle for Opel to overcome, according to German magazine Der Spiegel.  The automaker’s sales have fallen by 12 percent in the first five months of 2014, largely due to the country’s current crisis with the Ukraine.
As a result of Russia’s struggling economy, Opel has had to halt production at its Russian plant in Saint Petersburg for several weeks. They aren’t the only automaker experiencing a downturn in the region, Volkswagen has also seen a sales decline of 10 percent.
“The Russian market is difficult for the time being, however we remain convinced about its long-term potential,” an Opel spokesperson said in regards to the matter.
