Viva La Vauxhall: New Model To Sport Classic Name

The Viva name has been dormant for some time, but a rumor from AutoExpress suggests that the Vauxhall Viva will turn after nearly 35 years.

In an interview, Vauxhall Chairman Tim Tozer told the publication, “We have a great car coming with a name that is entirely appropriate for the UK market.”

The Viva is expected to be based off the next-generation Chevrolet Spark. What’s most interesting about this new Vauxhall city car is that the nameplate will apparently not be shared with its Opel counterpart. Tozer explained: “A member of my team said, ‘This [name] could be a good idea [for the United Kingdom]—can we take it to Europe and see what they say?’ And they said yes, which I think is fantastic.”

It’s also fantastic news for British motorists who fear the Vauxhall name might be superseded by the Opel brand. “The Vauxhall brand has a resonance in [the British] market,” Tozer said, “and we would be absolutely bonkers to throw it away.”

  1. We love the Viva name and are really pleased it’s making it’s return to the UK again. The Adam didn’t really sit well with many as a car name.

  2. Not surprised that GM have reviced the classic name ‘Viva’ however I am surprised that they have decided to use it on a small city car rather than something medium sized inkeeping with the original viva, that said I love the name and the new car looks a cracker.
