Opel has released its year-to-date sales figures following an extremely successful sales month in May. The German automaker made 21,040 deliveries last month, nine percent more than May of last year and much more than the overall market growth of five percent.
According to Opel’s preliminary data, the automaker increased its market share to 7.7 percent in May, an increase of 0.3 percent over May 2013. So far in the first five months of 2014, its market share has risen to 7.2 percent from 7.0 percent during the same time period last year.
Part of the growth can be attributed to the success of the compact Mokka SUV, which was number one in its segment in May and during the first five months of the year. Mainstays in the Opel range were also successful, such as the Corsa, which was the best-selling small car in the segment during the month. Furthermore, the Zafira was number two in the high-volume Van segment in May as well as in the first five months of the year.
Opel expects the momentum to carry over into June as deliveries of the hot-selling Mokka continue. In March, Opel claimed sales of the compact SUV had reached 200,000 units and in May, not even two months later, that figure had risen to 240,000 units.
