Camaro Z/28.R Grabs Its First Pole Position, Wins At Watkins Glen

Chevrolet’s Camaro Z/28.R program had a successful race weekend after Robin Liddell and Andrew Davis piloted their No. 6 Stevenson Motorsports Z/28.R to a win in the Continental Tire 150 on Saturday at Watkins Glen International. The No. 1 Z/28.R, campaigned by CKS Autosport, also grabbed pole position Friday in the hands of Eric Curran.

A trio of Camaro Z/28.Rs occupied the top three positions for the majority of the race Saturday afternoon. Liddell’s win didn’t come easy, as the racing veteran held off a hungry B.J. Zacharias in his No. 14 Doran Racing Nissan 370Z on the final lap to win by just 0.169 seconds. The victory marks the second win of the season for the No. 6 Stevenson Motorsports Z/28.R, the first being Liddell and Davis’ win in March at Sebring.

The No.9 Stevenson Z/28.R driven by Matt Bell and Andrew Lally went on to finish fourth in the race, while the pole-sitting No.1 car finished seventh with Curran and Lawson Aschenbach behind the wheel. CKS Autosport’s second entry, the No. 00 Z/28.R piloted by Ashley McCalmont and Bob Michaelian, crossed the finish line in tenth.

“What an great event for the Chevrolet Camaro Z/28.R program,” said Mark Kent, Chevrolet Director of Racing. “Congratulations to Robin Liddell, Andrew Davis and everyone at Stevenson Motorsports on Saturday’s victory at Watkins Glen. The second win of the season was doubly important in terms of the GS championship standings. The progress of this first-year program is remarkable but a long season remains.”

Saturday’s race at The Glen will air on FOX Sports 1 at 10 a.m. ET on Sunday, July 6, so if you need proof one of the best-looking cars on the grid can also be one of the fastest, be sure to tune in. The Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge meanwhile will move to the Canadian Tire Motorsports Park just outside Toronto, Ontario for its next race, set to be held on Saturday, July 12.
