Holden Recalling 42,000 Commodores For Seat Belt Issue, Will 2014 Chevrolet SS Follow?

Holden is recalling 42,000 Commodores for a possible fault with the front seatbelts. Holden issued the recall yesterday after a bulletin was issued last week telling dealers to put sales on hold. Since America’s Chevrolet SS is based on the same vehicle, is the Bow Tie affected as well?

Holden says an electrical short that can disable the seatbelt pre-tensioner mechanism in a crash if the pre-tensioner module makes make contact with the seatbelt buckle assembly under the seat.

“The investigation began following an isolated report received from the [production line],” says Holden. Other airbags and safety systems are unaffected.

But no word on the Chevy. When more information comes in, GM Authority will bring you the news as it happens.

  1. Based on VF Commodore? It’s not BASED on the VF – it IS a VF Commodore (albeit a LHD version)! Therefore, the SS should be recalled as well, as it uses the same seat belts which will also be defective. Although electrical dramas are pretty common in Commodores post-2003, especially higher spec models (VEs of a high spec, especially Calais and Calais V had a tendency to drain batteries, VZs had a tendency to keep the right hand side indicator on after you’d locked the car, especially if you activated the deadlocks on the doors, causing numerous blown globes – a 2005 VZ SS I had for a company car was one of those with this issue. My current GM car, a 2001 WH series II Statesman LS1 V8, doesn’t have any of these issues). Although having said that, Ford Falcons in the 1990s were known for similar dramas, which have only been corrected in cars from 2008 onwards.

  3. Seat belt buckle anchor point is different between us & au,
    AU cars have the buckle mounted to the trans tunnel, (car floor).
    US cars have their buckle mounted to the seat frame so the offending wire is in a different location.
