    1. It’s even more vanilla than a Buick. I get the GM logic: Copy Audi, shy away from polarizing design & blend in with the luxury pack. The problem it’s that luxury & even mainstream value brands are finally taking risks.
      Buick and Opel are my favorite GM brand because they produce beautiful cars minus the identity crisis.

Well they did have a good design with the current CTS coupe and there was so much controversy and grumbling over how it looked so you can’t blame Cadillac execs for playing it safe this time around. Frankly, I think the current generation CTS is the best looking car because it doesn’t look like anything else on the road!

    The coupe is will do fine. I liked the old one but it was just too controversial for the market.

    A coupe is a difficult sell these days and in this price sector most coupes are stylish but conservative. BMW, Audi and Bens all have conservative designs and all do ok. But then it comes back to the coupe design where it at best will only see about 1/4 the sales of the sedan.

    Also even if someone likes the design you have to deal with sight lines etc. To me that is just a part of the styling and accept that but many people will reject a car even if they like the styling if it has massive blind spots.

    I just drove a CTSV coupe the other day and while I had no issue with the sight lines as I use mirrors well I can see where many folks would reject it just because they would have to change their driving habits.

    The whole styling and ergonomics deal is like trying to balance a ball bearing on a needle. Now in some classes you can get away with it more like a Camaro but in others the buying demo is less forgiving.

    These are issues that give product development people sleepless nights thinking just how far do you go and in just what segment will take the more radical lines.

    One must also factor in the smaller the car the more difficult it is to do a very radical shape and still fit people in a back seat.

    Lets face it the Elmirage works well on the size car it was on but try to force that styling on a small car like an ATS and it does not translate as well. Some designs need room to work and also to relate the body lines as well.

    Although still prefer the CTS, is wonderfully beautiful

    And with anxiety, hope the Flagship LTS

  6. I agree about the issue of sight lines but, from what I understand, they have dealt with this problem with the ERL, a design that while on another platform still looks like a CTS coupe cousin.
    More than anything, ATS coupe makes me wonder about the long term plans for Art and Science and it’s evolution.

    This design is the metaphoric canary in the mind that will determine the next set of refreshes, not to mention the flagship.
