Every year on April 1, automakers put out false, and usually somewhat silly press releases to the media. Opel joined in on the fun this year, giving us the cheeky and creative World Cup-themed Astra Copacabana.
The Copacabana’s exterior features a Brazilian flag on the roof, in light of this year’s FIFA World Cup in Rio de Janeiro, as well as yellow and green decals running along the sides of the car. Opel says the interior is a ‘a masterpiece of craftsmanship’ with seats covered in real grass from the Maracana Stadium in Rio and footwells filled with the finest sand from Brazil’s Copacabana beach.
Continuing the wackiness, the Copacabana has a beverage vending machine on the headliner that dispenses ice cold Caipirinhas, Brazil’s national cocktail, along with an ice dispenser underneath the glove box. Buyers also have the choice of two horns sounding in either Samba music or Vuvuzela horn tones. Oh, and it also comes with a free pair of flip-flops, that’s if it were real, of course.
Opel’s approach for April Fools’ day was similar to that of Mini’s, who released the special-edition Mini Paceman ‘GoalCooper ‘ with a similar Brazilian flag-themed exterior and a soccer-themed interior complete with a miniature foosball table and AstroTurf  carpeting.
