Whether it’s the result of a bass-thumpin’ donk or an actual thief, wouldn’t it be nice to know when your vehicle’s alarm has been set off? Shanghai OnStar, the Chinese division of General Motors’s OnStar telematics unit, certainly thinks so, as it has just announced yet another addition to its suite of services. Called Vehicle Theft Alert, the service notifies owners by phone or text message when their vehicle’s alarm system is triggered.
Initially, Vehicle Theft Alert will become available to owners of select Cadillac models “soon”, according to General Motors/OnStar. Those interested will need to opt into the service in the Alert Notifications section of the Shanghai OnStar online portal, and enter the phone number at which they would like to receive a theft alert.
As part of its series of announcements at Auto China 2014 in Beijing, Shanghai OnStar also announced a redesigned OnStar Mobile App as well as a new Traffic on Demand service.
The GM Authority Take
Vehicle Theft Alert is yet another excellent and useful addition to the portfolio of services offered by Shanghai OnStar. But just like with the new Traffic on Demand service, we’re left wondering if and/or when Vehicle Theft Alert will become available in North America.
