The growing number of lawsuits filed against General Motors in regards to the recall of 2.59 million cars over faulty ignition switches have led lawyers representing vehicle owners to request the case be consolidated before U.S. District Judge James Selna.
Selna is the same judge who oversaw the proceedings of Toyota’s sudden unintended acceleration cases, which the automaker recently agreed to pay a $1.2 billion settlement as a result of. According to the March 31 filing requesting the lawsuits be consolidated, Selna is uniquely experienced and positioned to manage the GM case.
“The scope of the expanding recall and number of cars and consumers involved will result in a high volume of lawsuits filed in multiple jurisdictions warranting coordinated or consolidated proceeding,” Dana Taschner, an attorney for one of the plaintiffs wrote in the request.
