Exclusive: General Motors Delays AppShop Rollout Until 2015

At the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the big news, aside from the launch of OnStar 4G LTE in 30 General Motors vehicles, was the announcement of AppShop for Chevrolet, Buick, Opel, Vauxhall and GMC models, and the equivalent CUE Collection for Cadillac vehicles. Initially, GM previewed 10 launch apps, including Weather Channel, TuneIn Radio, Eventseeker and Vehicle Health, with the expectation to launch the apps this summer on select 2015 model-year vehicles. However, things aren’t going as planned.

For quality reasons, General Motors is delaying the launch of AppShop to what is now expected to be the 2015 calendar year. GM officials couldn’t disclose any specifics to us, but insisted that the re-positioned launch timeframe and rollout cadence will enhance the quality and customer experience of AppShop and its apps, as initial testing in GM test vehicles haven’t yielded the most ideal results so far.

However, the delay of AppShop/CUE Collection are not resulting in any delays of launching vehicles with 4G LTE, whose rollout is still scheduled for later this year.

  1. The delay is disappointing, but I’m glad that they’re focused on quality. They can’t afford to mar the introduction with anything sub-par. I just hope they’ll use the extra time to develop more apps and add full support for existing vehicles they’d already marketed as compatible with AppShop and CUE Collection.

  2. Yes. I hope the Volt gets the newest ( Impala; Silverado ) version of MyLink in showrooms very soon.

The delay on the AppShop is disappointing, but like JW adroitly says, it’s very good news they are
putting out a tested and effective product and not pushing it out the door until it’s 100% quality in
their eyes. Ford goofed a couple of times with MyFordTouch and really took a hit on the J.D. Power
owner experience ( quality ) polls.

Glad to hear 4GLTE is on schedule and again – I hope it’s in the Volt soon.

  3. This is one area that will sell a lot of cars but you have to get it right the first time as the younger tech buyers will not forgive if you screw them over on their option.

All automakers have made mistakes on their attempts. Ford, BMW and others have made major mistakes.

Best to get this right and sort it out before you put it out there. People will forgive many issues with a car but they lose their radio or connectivity they will not be so forgiving.

The automakers need to work closer with the phone makers and computer companies to keep the best technology and usability in their systems.

Heck when the I phone 5 came out many blamed GM for connection issues when it was Apples issue that was failing. One update fixed the issues. But this is where they need to work closer with them and make sure it is right.

I really hope they make it so we can do firmware updates on our own. I had to have one done on the GMC and I had to leave it at the dealer as GM pulled the idea of letting the owners do the updates.

My system works great but I wish I could do my own updates.

Some of these systems will sell more cars to the younger demographics than any other option on the car. The one with the best and most sorted will win many sales.

    1. Working with phone companies? WTF

      Are you clueless?

They are locking in with AT&T 4g for wifi and apps. Nothing else. You must pay AT&T to view your email.

This is a sham. Closed system. Yet everyone wants it? Are you all clueless?

      1. No you are clueless as I am referring to Apple, Samsung, Blackberry etc.

The key to get these systems to work is to make sure all brands of phones operate.

The hooking up with a phone system is a given as doing deals with all of them is damn near impossible at this point but I see it changing later on.

Starting with one of the largest suppliers and then moving to the others will be a natural progression.

When many of these systems came out only one or two phones worked on them and then it opened up as they resolved issues.

These systems are more complicated than the cars and have the potential for more issues than the cars. Just look at how the media loves the Cadillac but hacks them down just for the controls on the Cue system

These systems can make or break a car and they will take this in steps.

  4. This is totally pathetic.

Everyone has their own line of cellphone credit with probably unlimited data, not tied to AT&T 4g lack of signal.

This is shameful on the part of GM to tie everyone in to aT&T.

Time for some open source players.

  5. As an avid Chevrolet owner I must say I’m very let down by GM… I paid 45k for a brand new silverado as it was supposed to be the latest and greatest thing GM was offering and containing so many new innovative ideas. Now that they see maybe they didn’t do so well with the 2014 they are changing quite a bit of features for the 2015. I also read an 8 speed transmission is available for 2015.

The sad part is none of these options will be transferable to my 2014. GM dropped the ball with this one. I’ve had my truck in for multiple repairs and recalls within 6 months as well. I do love my truck but GM should offer some sort of extensive trade in offer if upgrading from a 2014 to a 2015 model. They would retain a larger customer base and there would be a few less Ram/F-150’s/Titans on the street.
