Not a week after GM North America unveiled an updated 2015 Chevrolet Cruze in New York, GM China one-upped its American counterpart by showing off the all-new 2015 Cruze in Beijing. Reception of the all-new D2XX-based model has been mixed, with some being taken aback by the vehicle’s newfound dose of “bland”, while others being impressed with its new powertrain technology and attractive styling. Meanwhile, the refresh to the current Cruze for North American markets seems to have garnered some positive critical acclaim as well, mostly for welcome styling revisions to an already-attractive vehicle. We thought to put the whole thing to a vote and ask — which Cruze do you like better?

Now that this has been up for half a day and no comments I guess I will after looking at the 38 ct. vote tally. 65+ % saying hot but yet so many here and on other GM sites wanting to pan or bash this new Cruze. Go figure. It doesn’t add up to all the negativity to me. Like I said previously the more I study and look this over especially in the side by side here, the more I like the new one. I think it’s HOT.

How did GM China one-up the American side when a) GM IS AMERICAN and GM CHINA is a subsidiary of that American company and b) GM brass in the U.S. make all decisions about when cars are shown??? GM China would not be able to show the new Cruze unless the American management approved. It was tines from the beginning.

China has one upped the world by becoming the largest Auto Market in the world.
From a pure volume standpoint, you are correct. But the U.S. continues and will continue to outpace China when it comes to profit on a per-vehicle and “snapshot” (income statement) basis for the foreseeable future at a roughly 2X pace.
I don’t get why GM feels the need to spend money to tool up for changes on the last year of production model to add features that will resemble the all new model coming the next year. They’ve done that several times before, most recently with a small grill change on the Silverado (black line splitting the center chrome bar) hinting at the the new model, just as the new Cruze grill and fog light setup looks a little like the Chinese Cruze. It’s like they’re afraid of making too much change at once. The average non-enthusiast person would probably not even notice that small styling change.

Also, not sure why they are making a NA unique Cruze with longer wheel base and altered loss.
Chinese cars are as large as US models: Look at Ford Focus, current Cruze and Buick Excelle. In fact, the Beijing Auto Show had some rather big compact cars.
Maybe GM is hedging bets, building two models in case one fails. They can not afford another Malibu.
Let’s keep in kind that GM has never confirmed rumors that the Chinese-market Cruze will be different from the global model. This is purely a rumor at this point, and an unsubstantiated one at that. There’s no reason for GM to make a global vehicle any different for a particular market, especially when no one else is doing that (Ford, VW, Hyundai, etc.)
The 2015 refreshed Cruze leaves me a bit cold. I think the new front-fascia is a bit overwrought. The only area that I thought needed addressing was the rear-fascia, but GM has left that entirely alone. However, I am holding out for the refreshed RS Appearance Package, which may make the facelift look more flattering. I’m also interested in the new infotainment system that the 2015 Cruze is supposed to get.
Meanwhile, I think the new Chinese Cruze looks quite nice. They’ve definitely stepped it up on the interior, and the resemblance to the Impala is pretty smooth. I could do without those angry lines in the hood panel, however…
I completely agree the current Cruze’s front end didn’t need any changes, but the rear should have been addressed. Would have liked to see the reverse of what they did with the refresh – leave the front alone and give the back a new look.
However I think the all new Cruze looks too Elantra-esque from the front/side, but the back of the car looks much better – the first generation looked too much like a toy for a toddler, like a cartoonified version.

Even though I like the new design, it’s too bad they didn’t go with that. I think it is much better, especially the front.
The 2009 – 2012 models are still the best looking models with the honeycomb grill , after that they changed the grill and fog lights (Euro/Asian) its lost a lot of its sporty characteristics . I think GM design engineers lost there fantasy’s with the China model , but its a trend that goes through the whole world wide car lines except for the new Mercedes.

The global version looks like the Ford Fusion to me. I don’t like it.
I have driven the 2013 Cruze and liked it very much. Of the two shown above, the 2015 is the same car I drove with a new grille. The Chinese model has a Fusion look, but the car can surprise us in how it drives. So for now I prefer the older look.
GM doesn’t seem to understand the importance of consistency in conceptual design parameters.
Give the same name to something completely different about the look? Why dump exiting near-optimal design?
At least, they should maintain existing design into the Performance lineup.
It’s amazing what a good refresh can do for a car. For years I always wondered why GM didn’t revise the ’06-’13 Impala. They could’ve used the same headlights and just changed up the body trim and bumper covers for a significantly new look. After all, the car did have an attractive body shell! Same with the interor – new dash and the car could have avoided the negative attention it gained in its last few drawn-out years. They got it right giving it the 3.6 v6 and 6 speed auto in 2012 but the styling needed some help.
