XCAR Drives The Vauxhall Insignia VXR Supersport: Video

Europe frequently receives desirable models and variations of cars which are unavailable to us here in the US of A. Just in the past week two enticing new cars which won’t ever be brought across the Atlantic made their debut, the Opel Adam S and Astra OPC Extreme. But there is one piece of forbidden fruit we desire to have stateside almost more than any other, the Vauxhall Insignia VXR Supersport wagon.

The Insignia VXR Supersport uses a 2.8 liter twin turbocharged V6 engine making a hefty 321 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque. That powerplant helps it accelerate from 0-60 in 5.6 seconds and on to a top speed of around 165 mph. Things get better, too. It also has a six-speed manual transmission, big Brembo brakes and four wheel drive. Can you really ask for a better package than that?

In theory then, the Insiginia VXR Supersport wagon should be one impressive machine. But because of its limited availability, we’ll never experience the VXR Supersport first hand. Luckily for us, Alex Goy, host of XCAR, reviewed it for his latest video to see if the high-performance wagon is as appealing in the real world as it is on paper. Check it out the video below.

  1. Isn’t this the fun to drive wagon Reuss was talking about?

  2. It may be but he has to find people to buy it.

I love this kind of car but the realities of the American market just are difficult to adjust to these kinds of cars and at the prices they would have to charge. Just look at the CTS wagon. It was a home run design but so few came to buy.

I love my HHR SS but I suspect when I replace it I will be in a Canyon as there will be nothing there to replace it.

  3. If it arrives as a Buick Regal Wagon, it will compete with the Enclave. But what other sports wagon does GM sell, anyway?

  4. Bring it over. We need a sport wagon. Who wants a stupid van or cuv? Dont put buick bages on it. Buick will ruin it. They will soften it up and put the price out of reach. Besides their grill is rather ugly.

  5. Why the hell is this not in my driveway right now? There are lots of wagons on U.S. streets! If this got good gas mileage and had AWD as an option with a large cargo area, CUV buyers might turn to this instead. The Regal is one of my favorite cars of all time and a wagon would be the icing on the cake! The Regal and Malibu should be powered by:

-1.4L Turbo I4 Hybrid (VVT, SIDI, and iVVL) that has 175HP and 190FT-LBS. Up to 47mpg
-1.6L Turbo I4 (VVT, SIDI, and iVVL) that has 215HP and 230FT-LBS. Up to 39mpg
-1.8L Turbo I4 (VVT, SIDI, and iVVL) that has 240HP and 285FT-LBS. Up to 34mpg
-2.0L Twincharged I4 (VVT, SIDI, and iVVL) that has 340HP and 360FT-LBS (Buick only with HiPer Struts). Up to 27mpg

  6. Hell I would love to have this engine but we will never see it.

Evan as for the engines that will be in it you need to stick a little closer to the play book. The 2.0 is the power engine and there is no plans for a Twin turbo 4.

The car is also too heavy for the 1.4 or 1.6 for now. Let them replace the platform and you may see those engines offered in some form then. The Regal is not a light weight.

Anyone catch a price in Europe for this car? I suspect it will be near $55K in American dollars.

    1. Twincharged is not Twin Turbo. A Twincharged engine has a turbo and supercharger. It makes for a smooth and extremely responsive engine (supercharger for low RPM’s and a turbo for high RPM’s). Go take a look at Volvo’s twincharged engines! They are very good engines and I could see GM whipping up one soon. The 2.0L I4 is a good engine to start with as it would get better fuel economy than any 2.8L V6 out there and still be able to have the same, if not more power.

The 1.4t and 1.6t would be very good engines for the Epsilon (or whatever new FWD platform they come up with) sedans. The 1.4t (175HP/190FT-LBS) has nearly the same power as the current 2.5L and the 1.6t (215HP/230FT-LBS) is equivalent to a small V6. The 1.8t (240HP/285FT-LBS) is a large V6 replacement and the 2.0TS is a small V8 alternative.
