1996 Impala SS With 2,500 HP Runs 5.46 At Lights Out V

Rick Wetherbee took to the blacktop at Lights Out V in Georgia in one of the more unique vehicles we have seen. An apparent fan favorite, Wetherbee’s 1996 Chevrolet Impala SS drag car was entered into the Radial Versus The World class.

Weighting more than many of its competitors, the Impala has no problem making its way down the strip, powered by a pair of massive 91mm turbos and an engine “apparently” churning around 2,500 horses.

Despite feeling the effects of prior rain, Wetherbee and his Impala still ran the 1/8-mile in an impressive 5.46 seconds. Much of the commentary on the video questioned whether the car churns out such large horsepower numbers given the time; however, regardless of the exact figures, the drag car is spectacular nonetheless. Not to mention, there was a slow start.

You can hear Wetherbee discuss his car, as well as his 5.460-second pass, in the 1320 video below.
