Why do Americans work so hard? Is it for a pool? A house? An expensive car? No. Because Americans are driven, hardworking people, or so says the confident, sharply dressed business man in Cadillac’a latest ad. Sure, the other countries might think the U.S. is crazy, but they didn’t get to the moon, invent the airplane and the Personal Computer, so who’s actually crazy?
This mentality is exemplified in the ongoing 2014 Sochi Olympic Games in Russia, which are totally going off without a hitch. To win among the best of the best, as the USA so often does, you need to be driven, you need to work hard and you have to believe you can do it.
Cadillac’s ad for 2014 ELR, which aired during the Opening Ceremony, also plays off this this idea. Would GM have the ultra-efficient ELR if they didn’t work hard, create their own luck and, believe they could do it? We don’t think so.
Check out the ad below and don’t forget to keep your eye out for it and more when tuning in to the Olympics over the next few weeks.

We had the opportunity to get a sneak peak at this commerical…love it!
IN YOUR FACE YUROP
C’est profond.
So tempted to go pick up an ELR, I don’t care what anyone says I am in love with this stunning vehicle!
I need help. My wife says guy in new ELR (poolside) commercial is Ray Liotta. I’m saying no! Who’s right? And who is this guy? Thank you.
Marvin,
Good news! You’re right. This guy is Neal McDonough.
I thought this was a trailer for American Psycho redux. This guy is wound so tight (as tight as that suit) that it is just a matter of time before he opens fire in a FL movie theater. Creepy.
Can’t stand this ad, championing ‘stuff’ and denigrating leisure. I will thusly NEVER buy a Cadillac, as let’s face it: Americans don’t wish to admit, lest their bosses find out, that no one ever is going to wish they WORKED more in this life unless they were dirt poor.
BTW, all you free market, work/work/work/worka/worka/work/work types: my household is in the top 5%.
Hi Sam,
I love this commercial…for the HOUSE! (And it’s also pretty rawesome that Cadillac is joining the electric-car bandwagon, too ~ the *ELR* looks sweet!) Can you please let me know where this HOUSE is located? #FutureHome #MaybeFutureCarToo Thanks!!!
My 73 Buick Century was a very nice car, as was my 70 Nova. I will admit also that the redesigned Cadillac is very well done, having lost the funeral director look it had for so many years. Do think though that the “ugly american” tune is one you should play? Most Americans work so hard because they will be let go if they don’t. Only someone lost in GM’s corporate culture would think that this ad makes sense. I was in a job some years ago where I came in constant contact with GM employees from the line up to middle management. It was always amazing to me that grown men and women could be so removed from reality.
Nice to see an American company taking a shot at those socialist Euros and sticking up for “our” way of life!!!
(BTW, nice bounce-back from the dead, GM, courtesy of a government-funded bailout. I love irony!!!)
Didn’t one of those lazy, take-August-off countries buy out a bankrupt auto manufacturer of hard working America? And GM itself had to take government welfare? A case of the cognitive dissonance of this culture at its clearest.
Not much of a bar to clear, taking shots at the French, n’est-ce pas?
Surprisingly teutonic casting too. He’d never stray from his Porsche, let’s get real.
Cmon, GM, not much of a bar to clear, taking shots at the French, n’est-ce pas?
Surprisingly teutonic casting too. He’d never stray from his Porsche, let’s get real.
Cmon, GM, could you possibly set the bar lower, I mean taking shots at the French, …n’est-ce pas?
Surprisingly teutonic casting too. He’d never stray from his Porsche, let’s get real.
“Would GM have the ultra-efficient ELR if they didn’t work hard, create their own luck and believe they could do it? We don’t think so.”
Is this a joke? How about the $50 billion bailout from the US government? The company wouldn’t be making ANY cars without it.
This is the worst ad I’ve ever seen. It’s terrifying that anyone would aspire to be that guy.
This ad is an embarrassment. At first, I thought it was a spoof, but, no. And by the way, about that car with the keys that we left on the moon… who is going to get it, because with our current space program, we won’t be back for awhile. And who works 50 weeks a year in America anymore? Entry level clerks, that’s who. I worked hard to get to where I can enjoy my 5 weeks of vacation. Spending time with my family is worth a heck of a lot more than stuff or a Cadillac. This ad is a failure.
I dislike this ad for so many reasons, many which have been cited by other posters. However, your belief that only clerks have just 2 weeks off is iwholly wrong, unfortunately. My job requires that I have contact with all different working people and I purposely need to learn about their various working conditions. Millions of people are working with only two weeks paid vacation and many with even less.
This is a terrible commercial. There are so many dysfunctional families because companies expect parents to put their work life before their family life. Certainly nothing to be proud of, GM.
Hey, with all this guy’s money can’t he buy a better pair of shorts and cheap polo shirt that fits? And that guy is NOT me!!!
I wonder where the filming location for this commercial was… and Neal McDonough’s opinion of electric vehicles….
Ellinghaus, Cadillac’s chief marketing guy doesn’t get it. … Why did you think an impractical, expensive Cadillac Coupe would sell? The risk reward ratio was huge there, yet you guys didn’t see it… Should have made it a hatch so it would be competitive with practicality to the lovely Volt, which has a big fan following.
And, with some of the front seats in the 2016 ELR, they do not recline all the way! The battery splits the seats in the front and in the back, so you can’t easily make out there, and the front seat(s) not reclining all the way, idiotic! I thought Cadillacs were easy to make out in… The 2014s, the front seats do recline all the way, but the car is not much quicker than a Volt. 2016 is faster.
