General Motors Canada Sales Down 20 Percent To 10,991 Units In January 2014: By The Numbers

General Motors dealers in Canada delivered 10,991 vehicles in January 2014, a 20 percent decrease compared to January of 2013.

While Buick sales grew, those of Cadillac were flat (at exactly the same amount) year-over-year, while Chevrolet and GMC deliveries dropped 28 and 10 percent, respectively.

January sales highlights (vs. January 2013):

  • Driven by the ATS and SRX, Cadillac retail sales grew 5 percent
  • Sales of the Chevrolet Trax up 33 percent
  • Driven by the success of the Encore, Buick total sales up 20 percent
  • Sales Cadillac ATS were up 26 percent

The General is anticipating the ongoing launch of its all-new full-size SUVs — the 2015 Escalade, 2015 GMC Yukon, and 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe and 2015 Suburban, plus the Cadillac ELR. Those will precede the new heavy-duty pickup trucks, the 2015 Silverado HD and 2015 Sierra HD, along with the midsize 2015 Colorado and 2015 Canyon.

  1. Chryslar/Ford is eating GMs lunch rightnow in Canada. The reality is that GMs most important models are not faring well against the competition rightnow. The Cruze/Silverado sales were hit the hardest. From the numbers, we can see that people have spoken on the new silverado. The styling is not as attractive as the Sierra. The GM truck people have should take action to offer things like a cleaner design, higher ride height, full sliding rear window, a legitimate off road package, and a more competitive price.

  2. The Malibu Canada numbers are troubling. Down over 58%!! Holy sh**t!
207 Malibu sold in January! Ford sold 4 times as many Fusion (828)
Even the ugly, unrefined Chrysler 200 sales was triple that of the ‘Bu (643)
What’s happening here? This is a shock to me. No one expect the Malibu to beat the Fusion, but to get outsold by 400% is shocking. It can’t be the weather, or the economy, especially when it’s also outsold 300% by the Chrysler 200, and even the Kia Optima with 508 units sold. GM, what’s the problem?

  3. I agree the Malibu is in need of help but it is what it is for a while. GM only had time to bring what was already started before the chapter 11 to market. While not a bad car the Fusion is a better styled car. GM is well aware of this and the present car will only have to go a couple years.

As for the trucks it is all price. No rebate less sales. Plain and simple.

I just came from the Auto show today and I heard a lot about price. People today are willing to take less of a vehicle if they can save a few thousand dollars. This is the case and why cars like the 200 and Optima sell

But in the end you get what you pay for and with a 200 you soon regret what you did.

    1. Scott, the Chrysler 200 is garbage, and should NOT be out selling the Malibu. The Malibu is no star in this competitive segment, but it is a much nicer and way better value than the 200, hence my surprise.

      1. I disagree. When I went out on my journey to find a sedan, I looked at the Optima, Fusion, Accord and Malibu. I test drove them and made lists of their pros and cons to decide which one to buy. The final outcome was the Malibu as it had some of the best comfort, quality, safety, performance, efficiency and handling! I think customers haven’t acknowledged the Malibu yet! GM needs to step up their marketing on all models! They need to have competitive commercials aiming straight towards their competition!

  4. The Malibu is a good car but the others are just a little better. Keep in mind the Malibu pretty much was mapped out back in 08-09 so it is relitivly old and GM has had to make do with what they had done vs starting from scratch. GM knew they were behind on it as they had to rush it to get it out before the Fusion or the intro would have even gone worse.

Also note the updates happed so fast I suspect GM already had them in the works before they released the car but could not wait for them. The Malibu program was behind and accelerated much once word on the Fusion came out.

The greatest issue here is the Fusion styling is spot on and has caught on with the public. The car also is priced right with the Malibu.

Autopal I agree the 200 is the worst car out there but it is dirt cheap. For many it is a larger and better car to buy vs. what they could normally afford. I suspect few Malibu sales have gone to the 200 and most have gone to the others. GM may have lost a Sonic sale or two to the 200. Chrysler is dumping them fast with the new 200 coming and it is better but still not the car to take the segment lead.

GM needs a new platform for the Regal and Malibu and we should see it by 2017. The last refresh of the Regal shows time is nearing the end for this old platform.

GM still has a lot of things to do and it can not afford to do them all at once. GM still has at least 5 more years to reach where they need to be. I said from the start the turn around will take 10 years if all goes well. So far things are going as well as could be expected and they still have a lot of work to do yet.

You have to look at this from the production perspective and how much new platform programs cost, how you have to pay for them and how much man power it takes to do one. GM is doing more than what most companies can do but development cost are high and GM needs to keep the trucks and cars like the Cruze going first to pay for the rest of this work.

Also keep in mind Ford also had a 5 year lead time on when they got their loans. Today they are just over 10 years in on their loans.

The Malibu is here and mostly to hold the market segment till better can be done. GM is making the best of what they have right now and they know better than any the needs they have.

I would love to have a new C7 now but I have to make do with what I have as I just can not afford it right now. That will change but for now my present Chevy will have to do the job.

Car companies do not set out to make a weak product but there are times they have to make do till they can afford the changes needed. GM is not just trying to fix one lime of cars but a whole cooperation. We are now just transitioning from left over product to new post chapter 11 product. The Epsilon platform is one of the last to go. Once it is replaced it the new one will underpin a whole line of cars from Malibu to XTS, Lacrosse and Impala.

It is going to be a tough couple years for the Malibu but it’s fortunes will change as they are working on it now. So get used to incentives on it and I hate to say it fleet sales to buy time. I see little more investment into this car since it was not expected to last all that long anyways.

No excuses just bad timing and the fact GM still has a lot of work to do. Not all intro’s are going to be home run. If the car is based on a old platform it will be buying time till they get what they need and want not so much what they had left to work with.

Look how long it took for Ford to get the Fusion model right. It took 9-10 tears from their loans.
