Strong Demand For Adam Minicar Helps Opel With Sales Boost

Sales of the Opel Adam have reportedly exceeded General Motors expectations after 21,000 units of the stylish minicar were sold in Germany in 2013.

Opel launched the Adam a year ago in response to a declining automotive market and struggling European economy, which has led to a larger market for less expensive, cheaper to run vehicles.

In addition to the Adam, Opel gained market share through sales of the Opel Mokka CUV, the only German-made vehicle in its segment, with sales of 20,000 in Germany in 2013

  1. So an automaker decides to develop a strong niche vehicle to improve market share and the result is improved marketshare. Imagine that… This speaks to the fact that a well packaged product sells well. GM needs to take what they have learned from the Adam and other successful product and apply this knowledge to a consistant message across all products. GM’s lack of consistant product in the past destroyed it… Automakers who take a casual approach to any aspect of product development, marketing product managment will fail in the future. Product packaging (not just innovation) and understanding the consumer is crucial and will be paramount to the success of any automaker. I know I have not said anything revolutionary, but to get all excited about Opel turning around based on one product is silly…

  2. Well, they needed the Adam just to offset the sales lost by the aging Corsa, which had its worst sales in over a decade, because Opel decided it was a good idea to give it three facelifts to try to extend its life cycle without heavy investments…..

  3. Adam is a fine little car but only sold in Europe. Does Opel make profit of it? I don’t think so. GM needs world models that are sold all over the world with different badges.

The quoted sentence above is not correct. It says that the Opel Mokka is built in Germany, which it is not. It is made in South Korea and soon also in Spain, but not in Germany. The Opel Adam, on the other hand, is made in Eisenach, Germany.
