The Opel Astra GTC will now be available with the next-generation SIDI 1.6 liter ECOTEC turbo engine. The small 1.6 liter mill, which is currently offered in the Opel Insignia and Zafira Tourer, is the first of three new gasoline engines Opel plans to roll out between now and 2016.
The engine produces a power-dense 200 horsepower and a hefty 221 lb-ft of torque in the Astra GTC, propelling the hot hatchback from 0-60 in 7.9 seconds and onto a top speed of 142 mph (230 km/h). On the combined cycle, the Astra GTC will return about 43 mpg while dispelling 154 grams of CO2 per kilometer.
The Astra GTC with the 1.6 liter turbocharged engine will start at €25,250 including taxes in Germany.

When will they ever certify that engine for NA and bring it over?? I can think of several vehicles here that can really use it. Encore, Cruze, Sonic SS and Verano come readily to mind.
Agreed, I would really love to see this engine over here.
Anyone thinking what I am thinking?
-Bring that hatch over here as a Buick
-Add VVT and iVVL to the 1.6t
-Boost that power to 215HP and 230LB-FT
-Bring the 1.6t over here
Would sell like crazy as a Pontiac G5 GXP – what the G5 really should have been… and could be today. It would also start to satiate the need for affordable sport that GM NA has really neglected.
Would also answer new entrants like Veloster, and fill the affordable hatch hole.
I hope the next Cruz will have this engine available in all markets. GM shopuld introduce a similar set up in the Malibu 2.0 Turbo, with SIDI, stop start and also put in similar set up to Mazda’s regenerative braking system. THis would improve the Malibu fuel economy, while packing a significant punch.
From what I understand, I didn’t think you could have Stop/Start with SIDI? GM definitely needs to work on it’s small engines.
VVT, SIDI and iVVL in all small engines (I3’s-I4’s). VVT, SIDI, AFM and iVVL in all larger engines (V6’s-V8’s)

Makes GM cars in US look old and ugly.
Sam, I’ve said it so many times now, it’s really getting tiresome. But I don’t want to give up if even one person who makes related decisions for GM might see one of my comments. It’s such a no-brainer for them. I will continue to hope.
If they want to sell in any decent numbers just stick a 2.0 in it with 290-300 HP and sell it to top the Ford ST models.
I just do not see them selling many diesels here as most people here that would buy one will buy the VW anyways.
It is about 10 years too late for Pontiac.
This is a must need for Encore, sonic, Cruze, Malibu, Verano here in the states!!!!!!
Scott- Right on target with the 2,0 engine pumping out those specs to compete not just with the Focus ST but with the 2015 VW R that is coming. As has happened for 3 years running, GM is missing out on selling me a new car with the “top off your GM card points” campaign because they do NOT have a “hot hatch” with these numbers. A price no more than around 35k would be icing on the cake for me.
I drive a HHR SS daily with 290+ HP and would be all over this with the same engine.
As for a Diesel I am not sure how well it would do. I have not seen anything on Cruze diesel sales. Has anyone got numbers sold. I have been looking for one and have yet to even see one.
This should be sold as a high volume Chevy Cruze companion, not a Buick. Honda is benchmarking the next Civic on this car!
This Astra would be an odd fit for Buick, sell at most 2000 units monthly. Chevy, since it offers no Cruze varients, could use a model such as this to better fight off Focus and.Mazda6.
A Cruze hatch is very unnecessary due to the fact that Chevy has the Sonic. A Cruze coupe to compete with the FR-S, BRZ and Genesis would be more realistic. The Verano is a great car to add a 3\5-door hatch variant. The Regal needs a convertible and wagon badly! A black high performance Regal Coupe would make a great GN/X. A Malibu wagon would be great as well!
The Sonic, Cruze and Verano need:
(VVT, SIDI and iVVL)
1.2L Turbo I3 with 135HP and 150FT-LBS
1.6L Turbo I4 with 215HP and 230FT-LBS
(Verano Only, HiPer Struts and Interactive Ride Control) 2.0L Turbo I4 with 280HP and 300FT-LBS
(Cruze Only, HiPer struts, Interactive Ride Control and AFM) 3.0L S/C V6 with 345HP and 370FT-LBS
The Malibu and Regal need
1.4L Turbo I4 with 175HP and 190FT-LBS
1.8L Turbo I4 with 240HP and 285FT-LBS
(Regal Only, HiPer Struts, Interactive Ride Control and AFM) 3.0L S/C V6 with 345HP and 370FT-LBS
