GM Cuts Over 1,000 Jobs In Brazil

General Motors Brazil has announced the layoff of over 1,000 of its employees from its factory in Sao Jose dos Campos, following the discontinuation of production of the Chevrolet Classic model in August.

The layoffs will affect 1,058 workers, including those that had already signed up for the voluntary resignation program last year, director of international affairs at GM Luiz Moan said.

According to local media, employees who had yet to sign up for the program were made aware of the layoffs in the last week of December. During a meeting with Guido Mantega, the Finance Minister of Brazil, Moan said the company’s decision is final with no possibility of the company changing its mind in regards to the issue.

GM had given employees a paid leave of absence from August until December in compliance with terms agreed upon between GM and the workers union.
