Cadillac has announced plans to offer a complimentary 240-volt home charging station, complete with installation, to early buyers of the 2014 ELR.
“Professional installation of the fastest home-charging unit is a natural way to mark the introduction of ELR to the luxury market,” chief marketing officer of Global Cadillac, Uwe Ellinghaus, said in a statement.
The promotion comes hot on the heels of Cadillac’s ultra low-mileage lease offer, which hopes to get customers behind the wheel of the electric luxury coupe for a 39 month lease period at $699 a month with $5,999 due at signing.
A standard 120-volt outlet can charge the ELR’s 16.5 kWh battery from flat to full in 12 hours. The upgrade to the 240-volt charging station cuts that time down to just 4.5 hours. Every Chevrolet Volt owner is now green with envy.

What you are paying for the car it should be standard practice.
I get a “complimentary” charger when I get a new phone. Shouldn’t this be mandatory for every battery-powered car?
This is the first sign they are having a difficult time selling this glorified Volt.
The same company that decided the time wasn’t right to offer a half ton diesel, somehow thought THIS was a good idea.
“The Volt sales are slow, so lets double the price and sell it as a Caddy.”
Something weird going on here.
That’s the least they could do considering how ridiculously expensive this Volt coupe is. I don’t see how anyone looking at that price tag doesn’t just go buy a Tesla Model S instead…
These EV’s have turned into research vehicles for GM, Ford and Chrysler. Everything that’s learned from developing these EV’s from interior squeak-rattle abatement to battery technology is being transferred to all of the other “conventional” platforms in their respective lines.
I have to agree with JustinF that this should have a complimentary charger, especially considering the brand and the asking price. Also feel the same way magirus does about the sales levels, 1/2 ton diesels, and the ELR however nice is still just a 2dr glorified(not an overall bad thing)Volt.
You mention an “ultra low mileage lease” and provide the duration and the rate but strangely, not the actual number of miles the driver is limited to.
For the deal mentioned, buyers are allowed to drive the car 32,500 miles over a 39 month lease period.
I’ve seen on other websites that the $699/mo deal is ONLY possible if you buy the base model with no upgrades, live in a state with no sales tax, and pay all the drive-off fees on top of the $6,000 down payment. Someone quoted $925/mo in reality for the ELR with Luxury and Adpative Cruise in Los Angeles. It’s a 10,000-mile per month lease, which is crazy low.
The Free Charger was something I said they should offer long ago. In this price class there should be no need to have many add on’s.
This still doesn’t provide any justifiable means of paying such a high premium for this glorified Volt! The Volt’s technology needs to be expanded in a broader way: greater electric range with sport cars, SUVs and Truck applications. This technology is still very innovative, however it’s beginning to lose momentum pretty badly! In this regard, GM is gonna have to step it up!!!
Yes, it is! All Volt buyers get a portable charge equipment (the charger is built in the Volt) for 120 VAC, stored in the back under the hatch cover. Only the Cadillac ELR buyer gets a 240VAC home station with free installation. This is optional for Volt owners, and many never need it.
Paul: As I replied to JustinF, the Volt does come with charger (it is built in the car). The charge equipment is stored under the hatch cover.
If you new my wife she loves do drive around . She goes there 3 Full tanks a month at 65.00 $ each time . She would save 195 $ and have a great looking car . Me I want the new C 7 Z07 8 speed Auto 🙂 But Woman are Woman . And Man love power
Some websites are reporting people getting ELR leases from $700-$850 with just drive-off costs down. That’s what I’m paying for my $60k Audi, so perhaps Cadillac is listening? Read some good reviews recently, too. Apparently, aside from the acceleration being the same from 0-60, the ELR has better 50-80mph acceleration than the Volt, and the car itself is definitely a Cadillac (i.e., full-on luxury coupe, not just a pretty Volt). I’m going to have to check one out this weekend!
