When it begins arriving to dealer showrooms in the second half of 2014, the 2015 ATS Coupe will be one of the first Cadillac models equipped with the new OnStar 4G LTE connectivity. Those paying particularly close attention will remember that General Motors first announced OnStar 4G LTE for various 2015 model year Chevrolet vehicles, which makes Cadillac the second brand in GM’s stable to officially receive the nod for the connectivity.
Besides the high-speed 4G LTE goodness, the 2015 ATS Coupe will also introduce CUE Collection — an in-car app marketplace accessible via the eight-inch LCD touchscreen. Essentially Cadillac’s version of what will be available as the Chevrolet App Shop, CUE Collection will enable users to download apps directly to the CUE infotainment system and interact with organize, update, or delete them throughout the life of the vehicle. The initial list of apps includes such familiar favorites as iHeartRadio, Priceline.com, and the Weather Channel, and others.
In addition to enabling the app feature set of the CUE Collection, the OnStar 4G LTE connectivity will also create an in-vehicle Wi-Fi hotspot capable of handling connections for up to seven devices at once. The built-in and always-on nature of the connection does not rely on a brought-in mobile device, a circumstance that can often result in a stronger and more reliable signal while negating any need for charging.
Although branded as OnStar 4G LTE, AT&T serves as the wireless service provider for the high-speed connection in North America. In the ATS Coupe, OnStar 4G LTE includes five years of the free OnStar Basic Plan that consists of OnStar Vehicle Diagnostics by email, Dealer Maintenance Notification, and RemoteLink Key Fob Services that allow owners to lock or unlock doors, flash lights and honk the horn, or remotely start their vehicle from a smartphone. The OnStar RemoteLink app is available for Apple iOS, Android, Blackberry and Windows Mobile.
While the 2015 ATS Coupe will be one of the first models to introduce 4G LTE and the CUE Collection, something tells us that other models won’t be far behind in adopting the feature set, including the 2014 ELR, 2015 Escalade, 2015 ATS Sedan, 2015 CTS Sedan. We’re not certain if the current-generation SRX will be available with the technology, however.
