Updated Chevrolet Volt Reportedly Due In 2016, Along With New EV

Every time we hear about the next iteration of the Chevrolet Volt, we hear the following:
- It will feature a greater electric range than before
- It will be more affordable
- It will launch around 2016.
What we don’t always hear, however, is that there will be another electric vehicle joining the stable. It’s unclear whether or not the new EV will be a Chevrolet or not, but Bloomberg Business Week reports that it would carry a range of around 200 electric miles, while possibly featuring an on-board generator, like the Volt, and will do its best to sell for $30,000 or less before tax breaks. Sounds promising, but will the price point be enough to get buyers to budge? Only time will tell.
None too soon. I wonder if this is the new CUV version they have hinted about. It is too cheap for another Cadillac and I just don’t see a Buick getting one.
A new Equinox EV? That’s when the new Equinox will be coming anyways…
I love the Volt, it’s just a little to small for my taste. A Malibu EV would be perfect! 200 miles on all electric sounds awesome!
GM should bring a 1.0L Turbo I3 a (VVT, SIDI, iVVL) 120HP and 130LB-FT and put it in the Volt.
If there was an Equinox EV, I’d say a 1.4L Turbo I4 (VVT, SIDI, iVVL) 150HP and 160LB0FT
Build it and I will buy!
200 miles on battery with a generator!
For around 30k sold
This sounds great, I can’t wait to see what they come up with. I hope they give us sexy design as well as the improved electric range and affordable price.
We will be waiting for photo’s Bryan.
I would not expect a Nox EV but a small EV CUV would be reasonable to expect.
The key here is the longer range which may point to a vehicle where you can place a larger battery in it. A CUV would have more room under the floor to place a larger battery.
This is where Tesla gets their range. They just use a larger battery since they have a larger car.
So maybe a Buick Encore EV?
This car will be overdue by 2016. The Volt is already nothing new anymore, and competition will be growing. I sure hope this vehicle doesn’t get delayed until 2017. An extra year would hurt a lot.
I wonder if the new EV will be much like the MPV5 concept? That sure looked like a great idea. Something like that would sell in good numbers and really help pay for the Voltec technology. It seems to be a no-brainer.
What this next volt or what ever it’s called has nothing to do with the looks of it! When people talk about the volt they don’t talk about the looks they refer to the way it runs and how much gas they have purchased!
A sexy car may make some people happy but most will be interested in what improvements to volt 2.0! How much more range and at what cost
This next car HAS to look good. Thinking it doesn’t and that it will get by on just being a below average looking environmental technological marvel is naive. Face it, a lot of people were silently let down because the original Volt prototype looked totally different. Not great but better than the production Volt. GM, make it useful and cool looking.
GM had a test mule of a BEV inside a Chevy Captiva some time ago this year. The battery was larger than the Chevy Spark EV battery. It may not be news, but GM did test the Volt system in a Malibu “mule” in 2009 and 2010 before the first Volt was produced.
So a Captiva is the possible Electric CUV.
They should discontinue the malibu and sale the Volt as its mid size competitor……it just needs a slick body gokd looks and tech and start at around 25…….it will be the best mid sizer in the class while having electric standard will be a first for this segment…….a SUV volt needs to be in the cards….
Lance this will not happen either as that would be pure stupidity at this point.
The Malibu even if it is not leading the class moves a lot of product and makes a good share of profit for Chevy so it is not going anywhere soon and I expect a all new one in just a couple years as this is the money segment for the industry.
Second not a majority of people are sold on Electric cars yet. Some day it may happen but right now there are a lot of Tesla people wearing parkas to keep warm as turning on the heat kills their range.
Third GM will lower the price of the Volt but do not expect $25K as that is tough to do with the kind of part they have to use. Even a Malibu with just gas is difficult to do at $25K.
Fourth The styling is going to be limited to a degree as aero plays an important part here. Even a head wind can lower your range so some styling elements will have to remain as there is an issue off drag. Note just the sharp edge on the rear bumper corner adds a noticeable amount of range.
As technology advances and better batteries come along styling and range will be more open and wide ranging. Right now they have a small box to work in and the best they can do is work on range and control the cost.
There is no way the Volt is ready to replace the Malibu…… Yet.
There will be no Captiva Electric.
We will get a Voltec CUV that was testing under the Captiva body. These are just Mules just like the Malibu and the Cruze mules we saw. This drive line will remain in a set apart models just as Toyota does with the Prius.
Now if only I can find $35000
Make the volt go as far as it can on battery and as close to 30k as possible and you have a winner
Volt MPV5 with some updates and a 200 mile EV range under 30k would change the GAME.
Why does it HAVE to look good. The prius is ugly as sin but seems to sell well despite its looks
Appearance matters, irrespective of what powers the car.
True Dat!!
Appearance should matter but yet the Prius and Leaf still sell.
True…thePrius and Leaf do sell. But this goes beyond making ugly EV’s. The fact that the Prius sells well does not act as an excuse that we haven’t “graduated” or evolved in the design life. The fact that the technology works is a good testament in progress. But we all can, at least somewhat, admit that these are goofy looking cars that society is settling for. But cars are still an emotional commodity. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if this great technology could be enveloped in a design that is useful in utility (i.e. Passenger room, some carry all capacity etc) in a ground breaking design that matched the ground breaking tech that made your blood run hot? It’s an undeniable and proven part of the car business. AND… Whoever does it first….
If the next volt looked as sexy as the new corvette or the camaro I still don’t believe that it would sell any better!
That’s not what drives people to be interested in the volt, would it be kool if it looked like a space ship? Yes but it’s simply not something the public demands for a car like this!
If GM gets the new version right when it comes to range and capability they will have zero problems selling this car at or below 30k!
Ask yourself this q’s what’s the most important aspect of this car? What ever that is needs to be the main focus!
Guys you need to wake up and understand till there are better batteries there is little power to waste here.
The Volt looks like it does as it is needed to get the max life from a charge. Even little changes will cut into the range of the car that they are working hard to increase. The limits of the batteries will restrict the box size of were they can go with the new design. Read Larry Edsall’s book Volt and it addresses the nuances of the body and just what it picks up in range.
While GM does not say it I would expect that the ELR has paid a price for the body styling in aero. It may be small but it still cuts into the range. We do know things like the added power, larger wheels and added weight have cut into the range a little.
When you have a range of 50 Miles on a good day you have little to give in other areas. Now on the counter when they reach 200-400 mile range there is more you can play with and more to give.
The Volt body is as much a part of the Voltech system as the battery and engine. It plays a important part in how this car works. In time you will see greater range and more freedom in design .
It is much like the Lockheed flying wings of the 40’s. They were a great idea for stealth and aero but there was a great lack of control. In time computers that have arrived that can make the unstable platform a reality for a mission ready bomber.
We are still early in this EV game and there is still a lot of do and a lot to discover. GM is still working on the Volt like they were the years they reported often on the progress but today that is all done behind close doors. The changes will be here soon and should be significant.
Finally a man with some intelligence
