The C7 Corvette Z06 Won’t Change Its Name To Z07, Here’s Why…

Earlier this year, there were reports indicating that the next-generation Corvette Z06 would be named Z07. But after some source-checking, and realizing that General Motors has yet to file a trademark for the Z07 name (they would have by now), we’re convinced that the Z06 name will soldier on into the C7 Corvette lineup. However, the Z07 name may emerge down the road, as it was the name of a package for the Corvette Z06 in the past. Personally, we would like to see more aquatic names, such as Mako Shark and Manta Ray. Just saying.
Anyways, sometimes, all it takes is some homework.

I would like to see it change to Z07 to align it with C7
@David
It was the Z06 on the C5 too, though. Changing it to Z07 to parallel C7 would be like changing the 911 name with each model number (i.e. 996, 997, 991 – which is the current 911).

The Corvette Sea Sponge, from which the C14 will release with a model called Seasponge (1 word).
But even if it were called the Corvette Sea Sponge, I expect the sponge to rip peoples faces off when it’s driven.
…Which will debut the same year as the Corvette Killerwhale, based off the Killer Whale concept truck. It should launch shortly after the Sealion, based off the Sea Lion CC7 Concept Showcar show car.
So if FoMoCo has mammals, and GM had marine names, I suppose we could leave Mopar to the weird animals; rocks.
Actually, RPO Z07 first saw production starting on the C4 1993 Corvette and was a $2,000 suspension upgrade package:

Mako and Manta Ray are just a little too fishy for me.
The key here is to keep enough retro to carry some heritage but keep the eye on the future and growth into other areas to compete globally.
Using the Sting Ray name is great but lets not over do it. There are many other fish in the sea.
Have you even seen either the Mako or Manta concepts in person?

So, we’ll see what the future may bring. 😉
The Z06 is an iconic and legendary name. Its root go farther back than the C5, there were 199 of them made in 1963 and are among the most coveted Corvettes in the world. You don’t throuw that type of heritage away. Changing the Z06 to conform to a generational change just does not make sense. IMO I say stick with the Z06 as long as the model is deserving of the name.
